Wasnt sure where to put this... but the fairy is a 6 so... its going here.
The button to lock and open the tailgate, and also the button to make the washer jet squirt on the tailgate dont work. The window wiper does though. Any ideas on where to start to try and trace down this problem???

Check and make sure theyre connected for a start, and that the switches themselves work. After that, look for the pulses to release the solenoid down the back, then the operation of the solenoid. And the washer motor might be stuffed. But definately make first port of call the back of the switches. Someone may have had the panel out and forgotten to replace the switches. Youve got two screws behind the fuel button release, and the other switch panel on the opposite side of the steering column, and three across the top. From there, just work your way sideways

I think the switches work... they make noise when you press them.
ie.. when you press the button to lock / unlock the tailgate - you can hear a clicking noise at the back. And when you press for the washer, you can hear a humming noise at the back - just no water.

the lock..... either the linkage from the solenoid to the lock is broken, or it's just to lock it so you need a key to open the tailgate instead of just pushing a button on the outside (kinda like central locking for your tailgate)
washer...... silly question, but does it have any water in it? also, check the wiring polarity for the motor is right, otherwise the pump will work, just its going the wrong way

you shouldn't hear anything comming from the tailgate, the washer pump is in the same bottle as the front screen. The jet may be blocked, try sticking a pin in it. Just inside the top of the tailgate there is a one-way check valve to prevent water from flowing back down the tubing, this also may be blocked, or the tubing may have become disconnected somewhere.

the tailgate does make a noise, and that would be the solenoid trying to open it.. remove the trim from the tailgate, and then the bolts, except for the top ones, just the 8mm's from memory, then you need to remove the number plate and there is a last one behind the numberplate.. that's right in that dark long hole... and then the plastic part comes off the back of the tailgate, with wires attached... disattach wires.. and now get someone to press the button.. and your problem should be visible from there... try pulling, yonking, WD40, and whatever helps that stupid little metal arm move...
Cheers and goodluck

oh, and about the washer I forgot.. thsi happens to me all the time... the washer bottle at the front houses for both front and rear nozzles...well hoses... and the hose down the bottom might have fallen out, and there's water going everywhere? happened to me... just check that both water pumps inside the washer bottle have a hose attached to them... one going to the bonnet obviously (closer to the front of the car), and the one at the rear going to the back of the car.
Cheers once again.

Does your tailgate lock seperatly to the rest of the doors? Mine's like a 5th door, locks and unlocks with the rest of them.

mine doesn't.. I have an aftermarket alarm system, and the stupid second button doesn't open / close the tail gate... so I have to keep it closed unless in use, for obvious security reasons.
So it is definately seperate in my EBII pre smartlock wagon. Cheers

Get someone to sit inside the car and press the tailgate button. Then stand behind the car and try and push the tailgate in to get it to unlock. Sometimes there can be a little too much pressure on the tailgate and it may be under too much pressure to open. Just dont hold the button in for too long as it may get hot
