Hey guys, this bar in my boot has rusted (see pics) and i was just wondering how i get it out?

the 5? vertical bolts just keep spinning when trying to undo them, do i have to take the bumper bar off?

and also what exactly does this bar do?

Yes, you have to take the bumper off unfortunately. But it's not as drastic as you think it might be. There are four bolts in the boot (two on each side) which hold the bumper in place, there is another bolt (one on each side) in the rear wheel arch that has to be undone too, to get the bumper off.

This gives you much better access to get the bolts for the towbar bracing (the rusted bar in the boot). You will need to take the 'tongue' off (the bit of metal that the towball is attached to), held to the main bar by two 18mm or 20mm bolts? I can't remember, but they're big and may need to be soaked in WD40 or CRC before you even attempt to move them. But the bumper needs to slide off over this to get it off.

That bar distributes all the forces of pulling a trailer more evenly across the rear of the car. If the towbar was attached in a central point of the car by only a couple of bolts, it would probably rip the whole centre of the rear end out = not good :D
