There is about 10mm play in my steering. I can turn the steering wheel to and fro freely without any steering, only 10mm, but I shouldn't be able to do it at all.

Is this an easy enough fix or is it something that needs to be sorted by someone who knows what they are doing?

more than likely your intermediate shaft mate, the one that goes between the rack and the column, go to your nearest ford wrecker and make sure you get the right one, they come in two lengths, easy to fit just need a 10mm socket or spanner, ive fitted 2 mine went in easy but just be careful putting new one in not to push to hard towards the column or else youll push it into your steering wheel department and f**k the cruise and airbag sensor like i did to my mates car,

Tighten the rack up, is a big 32mm IIRC allen key near where the inter shaft joins, jack the car up, and gradually tighten it up, though it may be to far gone, and the steering will bind, worth a try though.

XG also has a large flexy joint above the steering box that some times wears out put in a Nylon one it will tighten it up.
