Hey guys... I recently picked up a 92 NC Fairlane with the 5.0L V8 for a steal. Being a V8 I expected it 2 go better than it does. What relatively cheap mods can be done to get it going better? It is completely stock except for a pod filter. It also needs a new muffler so do you reckon its worth upgrading to a better catback system? Thanks!!

Plenty of money to wake them up mate. Mine is a stocker for now but it sounds good and goes well. As a guide, this is what I've done so far:
- 2.5' redback cat back exhaust. - K&N panel filter - AU3 XR8 snorkel - underdrive pullies - 5 speed manual conversion To really wake it up consider new heads, inlet manifold and a cam. It will go like a V8 then. |

How mans kms has the engine got on it? Maybe it's just tired and had a hard life
Check out the basics like filters, leads, plugs and stuff before modding (if you havent checked that stuff already) |

It's a luxo barge. It's not meant to go fast. It was designed to cruise down the fwy @ 1500rpm.
Biggest perf improvement you'll get is by changing the diff ratio. 3.45:1 seems to be the norm. It's probably got a 3.08 ratio or 2.something in there now.

thanks for the quick replies. I got the car from a relative who had it since new. They definitely took good care of it. It has got 150,00 K's now. banarcus, where did you get the underdrive pulleys from?

BPT in WA mate. It will help with the throttle response to no end and help it rev a little quicker.This with a change to the diff will help your car get off the line and through the gears much better.

One more mod you could do is ditch the clutch fan and put some thermos in

The first things you can do that are free are;
1. Advance your base timing to 32-33 deg. 2. elongate the holes in your EEC TPS(not the trans TPS) and set to 0.98 volts. 3. throw away that rotten hotplate on top of the engine. Cheers, Pete. |

piss off the pod filter, coz if thats just hanging in the engine bay that will be robbing you of power...you wana get some cold air in there via an EL GT air intake & a K&N filter.....or if you wana keep the pod, build an enclosure for it with a duct going outside the car so its taking in cold air..

G'day Pete, Just wondering what you meant by elongating the holes on the TPS? And how would you set it to 0.98v? Cheers Jeff

G'day Jeff,
Ok, to adjust the TPS you need to be able to move it further than you can with just the slop in the existing bolt holes. With the ignition on you need to probe the TPS connector with a multimeter to see the voltage with a closed throttle. Usually this is anywhere from .75v to .85v on a stock car. So you need to pick up Signal ground(black wire) and TPS signal(Green wire) pins on the TPS. If you do this first and loosen the srews enough to be able to twist the TPS you will see what direction you will need to elongate the holes for the TPS to gain a higher voltage than what you have. This mod does not give more power. What it does is reduce the time taken to go from idle mode to part throttle mode or wide open throttle mode. So it improves throttle response. It is very important not to go over 1 volt when setting this, if you do the EEC will think you are in part throttle mode even when you are not and you'll get a rolling idle and possible stalling. For this reason we set it 0.98v and no higher so that even slight fluctuations in VREF(although this is very well regulated) or other mechanical effects like T-body or throttle cable inaccuracies do not allow brief excursions into part throttle mode when we are really in closed throttle. Pete. |

A small round file done mine quite nicely. Can take a bit of time to get it right but its very easy.
