Hi everyone.
I have a XH XR6 ute and lately in the last two days it has been doing some weird things... Yesterday I was driving along at around 110km/h and the revs suddenly, for no apparent reason, dropped for a second, then came back up. This happened a couple of times.

Then later in the day it happened again, then the engine cut out completely and the car just stopped. Tried to start it, and ti would crank, but wouldnt fire. Left it sit for about 5 - 10min and it started no worries.

Then today, the original problem happened again, then the second problem. Once I let the car sit and got it started, it stopped again about 30m down the road. At this point I noticed the "alternator fault" dash light come on. The one under the voltmeter.

So I turned my CD player off, and stopped using indicators etc. Managed to get the car home and here I am now.

Can anyone suggest anything? I kept an eye on the voltmeter on the drive home, before it got too dark to see it, and it seemed ok. When I stopped at traffic lights with the brakes on, or used my indicators, it would drop a touch.

Then I got home, turned my lights on, it went down a bit but not heaps...

Has anyone had this problem before?? Cheers guys!!

Check your alternator first.
And this also sounds like the problem i had, turned out to be my ignition switch, the earth in that would turn the car on and off randomly, in the end it shorted the wire in a big cloud of smoke and sparking noises, scary stuff thought the car was going to catch fire.

It will be the TFI module on the dizzy breaking down under heat.

100% sure it will be this......................

Common problem and you describe the exact problem i had in my old EB falcon, with the tacho instantly dropping down then coming back. The car then started to cut out for about 5-10mins then i could start it again. I just got a 2nd hand dizzy from the wreckers for $30 and replaced the complete dizzy.

I replaced the hole dizzy because generally when the TFI module starts to fail it puts the hall pickup sensor under a high current load and they generally fail shortly after. The Hall pickup sensor is located under the dizzy cap on the side of the chopper disk and the TFI modlue is the grey module on the side of the dizzy with the plug going into it.

Cheers..
