Hi, I was driving the other night and I beeped the horn at a fox on the road....and the horn stayed on and won't go off until i pull the fuse under the bonnet....my ford dealer said I'd have to replace the entire steering wheel centre and can't just replace the faulty horn switch...is this true or are they just trying to rip me off???? does anyone know where i could get a black one??
Thanks, Brad

the horn switch is part of the airbag IIRC, it cant be replaced seperately.

Thanks guys.......I thought I'd only have to replace a switch to fix the horn drama.... which also cuts out the cruise!!! NO...ford want $580 just for the steering wheel centre (airbag included)....I found one at the wreckers for $60... BUT my car has the audio and cruise controls on the wheel ...the one i found at the wreckers didn't have these controls can they be fitted to the new centre?????

Brad You keep your current cruise and audio controls ... it's the clock spring that sends the signal through to your controls AFAIK ... just replace the centre section ... your controls just screw in place under the airbag centre.

i had the same problem in my old AU Forte... the airbag light was always on... and my horn didnt work... turned out it was a busted clock spring in the steering wheel, the horn and the airbag run on the same circuit. plus the horn worked if i connected my jumper leads straight from the battery positive and ground to the horn positive and ground... so i knew something was up, cost me $300 for a new clock spring... i cant believe how much Ford rip you the f**k off....

if u'r radio and cruise controls on the wheel are working and only the horn is faulty then u'r clockspring will be ok. i'f u are going to attempt to replace the airbag/horn switch u'rself just remember to disconect the battery. may sound like a dumb instruction, but hey i've seen ppl do worse

The cruise control/volume buttons dont run on the same circuit as the airbag/horn/clockspring
dont let ford rip you off saying you need a new airbag... they do this a lot becuase theres no REAL way of testing if an airbag is active without firing it off... just get them to replace the clockspring alone, i can 90% guarentee that that is all thats wrong.

... I found a airbag/horn assemble at the wreckers for $80 and fitted it ...all works as new... a little cheaper than ford quoted $580 + fitting.
Thanks for the help, Brad |
