all of a sudden the central locking in the xr has decided to play up. what happens is:
when i go too lock it the locks just go up and down 3-5 times the horn beeps twice and the car doesnt lock but if i lock it again after this it locks normally sometimes when i go too unlock it it will either unlock fine or the locks will go up and down 3-5 times before opening. i done a search and found that faulty actuators are the cause but mine problem is not consistant. does this still apply. also about a week ago i added front foot well lamps and ran them off the key barrel light. could this have caused the BEM to play up. cheers

it sounds similar to the proplem i had. mine was caused by a broken rod latch or something like that.
cost like $5 for the part from ford. thats all i can think of and its probably one of the thread you looked at.

The horn beeping is to tell you that not all doors are locked. It sounds like an actuator is faulty. They are quite complex in side the actuator compared to other makes.
The biggest problem is finding which one is faulty. You will have to disconnect each one in turn and see when the system works correctly which means taking the door panels off. PITA. It can as someone said before be something mechanical stopping the actuator going to its normal homing position. So when you find the door thats causing the problem, look to see that everthing is free and adjusted correctly. I usually disconnect the operating rod and if fault still exists then change the actuator. Unfortunatly there is no easy way that I know of to fix or diagnose which door. A good bet is the drivers door then passenger door and then the rears. Good luck Oh and by the way is that your nanna in the avtar.....WoW HeHe

Hi,
I had that problem in my XF Faimont Ghia, turned out to be a moisture problem, water had penetrated the window seal and soaked the C/L wiring, was ok on dry days....lol Regards, Gary. |

i bought an ef in 1997 and had that problem. was under new car waranty so took it to ford. was a faulty actuator. apparantly had a different resistance to the other 3. i dont know how they worked out which one.
