quick question, ive got an el fairmont ghia...when i take off at lights or from a stop and give it a bit, i hear a bit of a thunk at the rear, like my sub has hit the boot wall (not the cause :P) im assuming diff?? or

also when gettin it a bit loose in the rear, sometimes it seems my car goes single pegger, or revs more than youd expect for how much traction im losing.

how can i check diff fluid, or what are peoples opinions.

Maybe its thumping into 4th gear when you back off, assuming its an auto. Mine does it sometimes, but i just put it in 3rd when i go to boot it.

could be freeplay in the diff. the thump you hear might be the pinion gear slamming against the crown wheel. too check for this jack the car up, make sure the handbrake is off an in nuetrel. turn the tailshaft left to right by hand. if you can dont this and the wheel/s do turn the you have backlash in the diff

I always thought that If you can turn the tailshaft backwards and forwards without the wheels moving that was called backlash.

yeah thats what i would call backlash too. if there is play by checkin that its gonna make a clunk noise cos the tailshaft and diff gears/wheels arn't movin at the same time

The car is lowered yes? Check the trailing arm bushes and the rear of the drive shaft if it has been hitting the floor. If the trailing arm bushes are worn the diff can pull up on the front under hard acceleration allowing the driveshaft to hit the floor, its an issue with lowered cars only.
