I was reading about the new VW Gold GT (not the GTI) that uses a turbo and supercharger to provide constant boost throughout the rev range - the supercharger plays it's roll from idle to about 3,000rpm then the turbo comes into play. Just got me wondering how this is set up.
Do they have an intercooler with two inlets and one outlet, so both the units push into the cooler and then to the throttle body?
Surely if both units were in series the one would be clogging the others flow?
I've heard of a Corrolla with an aftermarket similar set up before and a VL with twin turbo supercharged.

Old!

BMW where testing a similar set up way back by using electric motors to spool up the turbine. it disengages when the turbo is up to boost.

There have been a few cars with the super-turbo setup.

Nissan March SuperTurbo was one.

http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/A_2216/article.html

Apparently it was a giant killer in its time with only a 930cc motor.

There have also been kits for the 4A GZE motor too.

They reckon the only problem with the dual induction layouts is the changeover point when the second larger boot goes in. Especially on a track or coming out a corner where the car maybe at 3000-3500 rpm the change over may be enough to under steer. step out or even light the tyres.

They have had problems with the Liberty B4 legacy too with its sequential twin turbo layout with the dreaded change over point. Apparently the time between the change overs is around 700 rpm which is an eternity in a race if its close..

There are quite a few ways to set this up, however the best way is to have staged boost. Set the supercharger to run at say 7psi. And fit a turbo thats 50% larger than what you normally would (NA + 7psi ~ 50% larger motor). Set the turbo for 12psi or so as a starting point. You will find that if you feed the inlet of the supercharger with positive pressure from the turbo, that it will flow a massive amount of air, much larger than it was ever designed to. Boost will be above the 12psi mark if the supercharger was big enough for the engine in the first place.

I've always wanted to fit a 4L with an M112 and a 1200hp turbo, and see just how low you can get a big turbo to spool up, and how much top end could be made.....but I have too many other projects atm to think about taking the 35/40 off my falcon and start playing with this kind of thing.

Bahh just program some anti lag software...
Or pre stage.... Get one system working and don'tbother mixing them!!!
Car manu have the money to stuff around with these things.. we don't !!!
I'd like to see the variable vane turbo fitted to petrol engines like the new ones in diesels.. Bassically the A.R is variable on both comp housing and turbine!!!!

Two stroke diesels can not run without a air displacer so Bandag's 2 GM two stroke diesels have to be fitted with a superchargers, most aftermarket roots superchargers are based on GM's air displacers, they even use GM's sizing i.e. 6/71, 8/71 which means number of cylinders and how many cubic inch per cylinder (8/71 is 568CI).

ive beein in the bandag bullet lol and seen it in action plenty of times when i was younger. my old boy has some photos of his truck with the bandag bullet as a part of a promotional partnership a few years ago. the bandag bullet was originally twin turbo v12 or thats what it has been converted to now ?
