Help please

I have a 1994 E. F. Fairmont Auto with a V8. I am having problems with the car starting. The car is starts very easily, when it is cold

Once the engine has warmed up and you turn the engine off and try started again the starter motor will not turnover you can hear the starter motor clicking. When you turn the key. Once the engine has cooled down after about 10 minutes. I can start my car again.

What I would like to know, is it the switch on the automatic transmission. That lets you started in park and neutral only is starting to die. Or is it my starter motor, that is starting to die.

Thank you for any help and I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong area

It could very well be the inhibit switch. In the V8 it sits very close to the exhaust and over time becomes heat affected. From memory it cost around $100 fitted when we did my sons. You can easily fit yourself but we got a service done at the same time.

I'd say the starter, slap it with a steel rod when its hot and see if theres a difference.

if the starter motor is clicking it sounds like a battery issue. I've experienced the same issues, when cold it would start fine, but if i drove it for a while, stopped and then tried to start within 5 mins it would start....check battery voltage when cold and then hot, also when you start cold does it turn over fast or move of a chug chug chug?

My first check would be battery terminals and the connection to the starter motor and the earth connection to the block.
IF I remember correctly if the inhibit switch is faulty you will not get anything, no click as it breaks the circuit to the starter solenoid. If all connections are ok then you can try this. Using a large screw driver short out the terminals on the starter solenoid when the motor is hot and see if the motor turns over. If it does then the starter solenoid may be faulty, if not then starter has a porblem. We are assuming that your battery is OK.
Is the clicking heard when trying to start hot the solenoid on the starter or the starter relay.
Hope this is food for thought

thank you all once again for your replies I now have some ideas of what to do and what to look for

once the engine has cooled down and I tried started again. The starter motor starts fast and not slowly. So I think that my battery is okay I will try what falconea said
