Just changed the oil in my BA.. drained out the old oil, poured in the new stuff. When I started the car, the oil light stayed on and beeped. I turned the engine off straight away because I don't want to cause any damage.. any ideas? Do I just need to leave it to run for a few minutes? The oil level is reading correct on the dipstick.

Generally the oil takes a few seconds to go back through the engine, could just be that.
How is it now? Did u do the procedure the correct way? No oil leaks underneth the car? |

Can take upto 10 seconds to fill the filter, then the pressure will build up.
If you want to avoid that wait, you could fill the new filter with oil before you put it back on. |

Yes, the plug is in and tightned enough but not stripped, same with the filter. Put in a full 5L. I'm scared of breaking something.. :/

theres your problem,I have a Ba turbo it takes 7 litres of oil, check your manual I think the std BA takes 6 or 6.5 litres not 5 litres as you have put in.

Between the marks on the dip stick , equates to about a litre, if u didnt fill the filter before putting it back on, it will take 10 odd seconds as someone said. Run it again, 10 secs wont hurt, then check the stick as per normal.

um... everybody knows it takes a few seconds to fill the oil filter and get the oil up to the head. If you didn't know this, then you musn't know much about cars. In which case, why would you be trying to service your near new BA risking doing damage to it?
If the oil level is between add marks and full marks than it's perfectly ok to drive, thats why those levels are on the dipstick in the first place. Do what everyone else does. start her up, DONT REV the engine until you hear the oil at the lifters (click goes away). Take it for a drive around the block. come back and have a good check for oil comming from the drain and the filter seal, then you should be fine.

Geez that's a bit hawsh!
Fnp, i think its covered pretty well here. Next time, fill the new filter up with oil prior to installing. Also a good reminder to stick your finger in there to get some oil for the o ring (you did smear oil on the or-ring, right?) If oil pressure not up after 20 seconds then something aint right.

but remember you didn't kow how to do things at
first either, you learnt like everyone else. once you start piling on the km's it get worse, the au at 925,000k's ratles like a wind chime in a huricane for a good 10 seconds after every oil change. and get yourself some car maintence books from library or something and read!

My EF still shows no oil pressure and make horrible noises even when hot. I looked up oil wieght to use and it said 15w60, not 15w40 as described elsewhere on this site.
Whatever... The EF has either locked open its pressure relief valve in oil pump, or someone has slammed the bottom of the oil sump so damn hard that it has pushed up into the oil uptake, meaning the oil ain't being sucked up and spat around by the pump. Either way - I didn't notice how desperate the situation was until the clanking and chinking reached proportions suggesting my recond head is a waste of money. Wish I didn't have the MP3 collection blasting so loud that day!!!! |

oil specifications is 10w30 for ba/bf non turbo motors and they take bout 6.5l, turbo modles and xr8 15w40 there again xr6t and typhoon are close to the 7 mark and if memory serves me right xr8 still round the 6.5 mark,
boss 290 motors(gt,gt-p,pursuit) 0w40 and around 6.5l again , hope this helps ppl fiend the viscosity rating is also to do with climate temps in nz they must run slightly thicker due to colder temps as here in oz its 15w40
