i was told that the au coil packs are better than ef ones.
is this true?
if they fit ef's is it a straight swap, or is there f@rt about with wiring, mounting etc.

Series one AU I think is the same latter AU's are not the same. As for which is better they both work the same and there would be no reason to move from one to another assuming you have a working example.

the EF and series 1 AU had the same coil pack (same ford part number)

Correct. S2 & 3 are different though as stated above.
