Was fiddling around this morning testing out the Key On Engine Off tests hoping it would point to some direction with my fuel consumption being a little higher than usual...

Now it either reported 11 (system ok) or I was supposed to interperate it as 22 (MAP out of range)

eg. ___!_!____!_!____________!___________!_!___!_!____

So, anyway, was cleaning up the wiring looms in my engine bay, secured the MAP sensor to the firewall where it should be and I went for a drive. Black smoke p****d out everywhere filling the street!!!!

Trying to figure out what was wrong I did another KOEO test, and all I got was the same output as before.

Finally figured out the hose from the MAP to the Manifold wasn't long enough and I had pulled it out securing the sensor.

So.. I'm now assuming there was something wrong with my MAP all along... the hard fault code was 22 Im sure, as was the memory code.

How can I fix this one... is there a way I can test the MAP to make sure its output is the correct voltages??

have u put the hose back on and taken it for drive?

i am guessing the black smoke was due to exessive fuel

Okay, I did another KOEO test... it is confirming the code 22.. the MAP.

I did the test in the Gregory manual... now I have a problem with this... in the book it says the wire (pin 26) should read 5V... the diagram show this wire to be the left wire of the three... but in the electrical schematic it shows pin 26 is actually the middle wire with a different colour...

Now I tested that wire and I got 5V... so Im assuming the Gregory manual have gotten something wrong, I have also read another document which states the 5V supply is also one of the end pins and not the middle one...

So do Ford actually know what is the correct wiring for this device?

Either way, I think my MAP needs replacing.

Frank...

Yeah I put it back in and it goes like normal... with it out it doesn't get any vacume from the manifold so the ECU thinks WOT = inject a s**t load of fuel... hence... all the black smoke...

With the MAP disconnected it runs like s**t... lol

And... and new MAP sensor costs $149 from Repco...

Fook me... now I gotta decide wether I should replace it or not... car seems to run "....ok" with the one in there although the ECU is telling me its shot...

Any ideas??!?!

ring coventry's or national parts in brisbane, they sell heaps of stuff for trade price, just say you're oldmate from some mechanical place, and want to do a cash sale on the item.
I don't know how trusty it would be, but you could go to the wreckers and get 2 or 3 of these sensors and see if any of them work better, and if so, maybe invest in a new one.

Okay, I went down to the wreckers and got 2 other MAPs from some EA's. I also picked up 3 light holders from a Ghia (now I have footwell lights in my Fairmont YAY!)

Swapped the MAPs over and it made no difference... so I did a K.O.E.R. test... and I now learnt there isn't a 2 second gap between pulses, its more like 1 second... so on my first post it was actually stating 11 (system ok).

But on the K.O.E.R. test it was picking up the Oxygen sensor signal was low, so now I'm gonna look into that one.

Anyway, if anyone needs a replacement MAP just let me know... the replacement MAPs from Ford are $206 each... I have 2 extra MAPs here.

Okay, to concluded this topic...

Yesterday when I did an ECU engine running test it reported low signal in the O2 sensor.

Today I went out with my multimeter and probed around as it states in the Engine Management O2 tests in the Gregory manual, to find my O2 sensor was not sending the correct voltage values... if any at all. :?

So, off to Repco I went again, got a new O2 sensor ($84 as that was the price AutoBarn was going to sell it for), put some anti seize creme on the threads and stuck it in. :!:

Did the K.O.E.R. test again... code 11 (System Ok). Thank god!

The old Bosch O2 sensor had a huge dent in it, prolly cracked something inside causing it to loose its signal. The ECU seeing this low signal (lean mixture) then tried to compensate and my car has been running a little richer than it should have been.

I will be watching the fuel usage now, with any luck will be able to get 1/3 - 1/2 more K's out of her, especially on the long trips.
