Has anyone tried sanding back a ute hard lid with leathergrain finish, so that its smooth like a BA colour coded lid.
Reason i want to know is mine has faded so i want to spray it, but it would look better if it had a smooth finish. |

I've thought about it, but I'm reluctant to try it in case I stuff it up or something like that....they're not exactly cheap to buy.
Maybe ask a panel shop and see what they reckon?

you'd be looking at around $1700 for a smooth hard cover.
the trouble you'd run into is sanding back the adhesive they use to hold the leather finish down, not an easy task.

AFAIK you can not get the smooth finish tops for XD-XH utes, unless you go custom. Shame really, would suit a nicely done X ute.
I've seen a ute with the leather finish that had been entirely airbrushed, it was made to look like ice and running water and the leathery finish made it look real good.

What you need is a good 'high build' 2 pack primer and a lot of sanding.
Trouble is it will be hard to get a even finish all over a large flat panel like that.
