Hey guys,
I've decided I want to service my auto myself and I just wanted to know if it is as simple as what is said in my Gregorys. Keep in mind I obviously have an EF Fairmont, are these kits suitable for my trans? Secondly where would I go to get the right fluid for the transmission. Is it best to go genuine Ford stuff, or what? The Gregorys descripes how to remove the plate and let it drain from there, but that isn't giving it a full flush is it? Is a full flush of the system, something I can do, or do you need to be a qualified guy to do the full system? Costs $160 for me to get a standard trans service. That kit is $80 and if you divide that by the amount of kits, well it's $10 for this service. Add to that the fluid, of which I'm not sure of the price. Could I make a saving by doing it myself, and be save in the knowledge that it was done "well" because I did it myself? Or is a full service of the transmission not all that expensive? Yep, a few question, but any input from you guys would be great, thanks.

Is your EF a dipstick (auto dipstick) model or not??? How dark is the fluid currently in the tranny????

Yeah I got a dipstick. Haven't checked fluid, but it's due for one about 5k ago.

Very difficult to do a full flush with out the proper equipment. As far as i know a tranny shop plugs a machine in and pumps new fluid in and flushes the old fluid out. To get that effect at home you need to remove the pan unbolt valve body and find a way to drain the converter. If its been a while since it was serviced I would get the pro's to do it then drop the pan every second engine service or every engine service if you give it a hard time and that should keep the oil fairly good.

Hmmm, well I got the car at 111 000kms and I had the auto serviced at good intervals right up to the time it was dur for it's 150 xxxkm one. They were just standard services though.
Should I get a full flush of the system, a "deluxe" service of the trans?

How I flush trannys at work is to connect a tube to the top cooler connector on the radiator and use the engine to pump out the fluid.
The car is on a hoist, refill fluid ( refit cooler line ), run engine and tranny through the gears, for about 3 to 4 mins, then drain again through top cooler connector. Do this about 4 times, then drop the pan and fit new filter and gasket, refill to level, run, and recheck.

Yeah you just put me off the full job cjh, lol, way too many steps there where I could fudge it up badly. O me.

f**k them trannys not having a drain bolt, i put 16 litres through the van i got, but dropping the pan 4 times is time consuming, i would go the flush if the tranny doesnt have a service history, or if its s**t fluid.

$160 is not bad for a transmission flush, when I did mine I think I paid not too far off that in auto trans fluid alone (put 20L through it), probably a bit too excessive but if mine gets a hard time so I'd rather do too much then too little.
