Just a query on mounting a sub so it fires into the box. I've seen some setups where the subs were WAY to big to fit into their recommended boxes, or a box that wasn't a waste of space. I'm curious as to how this affects the bass / quality / phasing etc.
I have a ported box for a 12" 4500 MTX. I would be doing it purely for show, but would this affect performance etc? Your views would be great |

Chuck it in the car and try it.
It shouldn't affect it at all, there will be differences but your ears wont hear them Cheers

doesn't make a huge audible difference, do it, give it a listen and see which ones ur ears appear to prefer
 the only differences in sound is the box volume as u no longer have the magnet and speaker taking up space inside the box

I gave this a go. It didn't seem all that different, no louder etc, but I guess it is effectively a bigger box??? and can therefore play slightly deeper? Looks kinda cool, with the black spider hanging out of the box.
i guess now it depends on where i'm going to secure the box, as to whether the sub is in, or out of the box. Thanks |

if anything its for show, the initial movement of a bass driver is to push out first then sucks back in. if the driver is mounted on the outside and wired in the correct phase (reversed as the driver is on the outside) the cone can distort as it sucks out because it is trying to pull air from the box.
the distorting will be greater if in a sealed box, another problem over time is the coil tearing from the cone. if the driver is mounted the correct way the cone is under a vacuum and the cone will return under less stress the . free air drivers are usuall vented through the coil/dome. |

not really as most active x overs have a 180deg phase switch on them, it depends on which way the driver is facing and the position, you select the phase that works better.

Dont forget if you mount the sub backwards you have to wire it backwards to.
Other wise you will get sound waves canceling each other out. Cause when your normal speakers are pushing out on a bass note your sub will be sucking in. So you need to wire it backwards to. And sound wise, should sound better as box volume will be increased.

thats only applicable if you have more than 1 driver delivering low frequencies with out of phase hook ups. thats where you will get phase cancelation, also if the front and rears are delivering low frequencies with an opposite phase which they shouldnt as it defeats the purpose of a sub!

is that what my head unit does. its got a thing that i can select the sas reverse which is in the sub. the sub sound a little different but i pt it back to the original. could this make the sub suck in first then go out.

yeah sounds like it. You have to invert the sub to make it work though(basket outside box). Otherwise when your sub moves out your speakers will be moving in and sounds terrible.
