In need urgently for rims and tyres to fit a VS commy. Mate got pulled over the other day and the cops defected him for having 18" wheels on. We are still in the process of seeing where the law stands on this issue, but in the mean time he needs some new rims and tyres.

If anyone can help me out that would be great.
He is located on the central coast (wyong) and he works in newy so he is close to everything.

Law clearly states you are only legally allowed to exceed the manufacturers maximum optioned rim size by 1 inch. basically I think the sanator came with 16's on it and that was the largest factory rim, he is TECHNICALLY only allowed to run 17's. bit of an a**hole move on the cops part though. sounds like he was just looking for a defect. send the copper down to sydney, he would go nuts writing tickets for honda civics with 20 inch rims..

Cars built pre adr compliance can run whatever..

this meens for ford guys to Tecnically stay legal,
EF 17 inch is the max,
EL 18 Inch is the max..

I thought it was 2 inches above specified size.

But you must remember HSV and Tickford or FPV are not the main supplier they are a seperate companies so for example vr came out with 15 std even in Calais, HSV came out with 16 and 17 so you can only put on 17 max in a VR if the 2 inch rule is right.HSV redid the suspension geometryto allow bigger wheels as did Tickford.

That is my understanding of the rules.

Somewhere on the there is a sticker, often under the hood or insider the rear door that will twell you the largest size tyre put on during production for that model.

early 70's I think depending on the company as it was phased in not an overnight thing like no smoking in pubs. BUT it was definatly from the same time that it becam compulsary to have seat belts as standard fitment on all new cars.. Some manufacturers were altready installing seatbelts as standard fitment at this time.. so some were already up to standard as opposed to complying at the last minute. Foreign built cars were the most obvious exception. some cars had bolts put through the b and c pillars to mount belts on.. Valiants were often seen with belts fitted this way.

HSV and Tickford were recognised as subsidery (or however you bloody spell it) vehicle manufactures as the vehicle being built was the stock ADR chassis. I am only going on NSW regs here, I dunno about other states or territories.. Unless the company actually built the chassis them selves or significantly changed things like engine mounts, suspension mounts, seat belt mounts.. you can see where I am going here I think.

But yeah I still think your mate got the copper on a bad day..

He was acyually told by the RTA that it didnt matter what sine rim he went to 17, 18, 19 inch rim, the determining factor was the width of the tyre, you can only go 1 inch wider. That seemed strange and f**k up if you ask me, but thats what they said.

Anyways, still after some steelies or mags to get him by, and passed, he needs to get it done by this saturday, or he loses his licence. Its a f**k crock of s**t i know. But ya gotta do what yua gotta do hey.

Replacement wheels requiring an engineering certificate
Wheels that exceed the diameter and width limits for minor wheel changes must be assessed by a signatory. If the
signatory finds that the wheels are safe for your vehicle, you will be issued with an engineering certificate.
The vehicle owner must notify the RTA so that registration records can be updated. This is done by obtaining an
“Adjustment of Records” and a “blue slip” from an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS).
(contact the RTA Customer Service Centre on 13 22 13 for details of your nearest AUVIS).
The Adjustment of Records, blue slip and engineering certificate are then presented at a Motor Registry.
The owners copy of the engineering certificate is stamped and endorsed by the RTA and must be kept in the
vehicle. This certificate must be presented to an authorised officer of the RTA or the Police when requested.
There are limits on the size of wheels that can be certified by a signatory.
These limits are as follows:
Rear wheels
The maximum permitted rear rim width for a particular vehicle is determined by its unladen weight (10 litres of
fuel, no occupants or luggage) in accordance with the following tables:
Front wheels
Front wheels shall be:
• No wider than the maximum permitted for rear wheels on your vehicle or 204mm (8 inches).
• No narrower than 70% of that fitted to the rear wheels.
• No narrower than a standard wheel fitted to the your vehicle as original equipment.
Front wheel drive vehicles
Except where the original manufacturer provides to the contrary, front wheel widths shall be no more than 26mm
greater than the widest optional wheel offered by the vehicle manufacturer. This requirement also applies to fourwheel
drive vehicles with constant front wheel drive.
Vehicles built to comply with ADR 24 (after 1/1/1973 for passenger cars)
