I've got this weird starting problem on my 95 EF Futura.
If i leave the car overnight it will start perfectly in the morning 90% of the time. If i turn the car off and leave it for 5-10 minutes it will start perfectly but if i wait longer than 5-10 minutes it will struggle to start ( Have to hold the key for like 5-7 seconds) I know when its going to have trouble starting because the noise is different when i turn the key. Ive heard all sorts of reasons like fuel pump, injectors, fuel lines, filter (got a new one 10000Km ago and hasnt made a difference) etc. Another problem ive come to notice in recent weaks is sometimes when im driving the car will just die, foot flat and i get nothing but then suddenly it will just kick in again. Has anyone got any ideas? |

Ive bought new leads after this problem came up but they didnt do anything. The problems been ongoing for like a year. One mechanic just said id have to live with it but there must be a way to fix it.

Your mechanic just said to live with it? Sounds like a real mechanical genius to me...
You give him money?

Had the same problem on my ED ... it was the fuel pump ..

My EF used to have an intermittent starting problem, sometimes i would fire up but just die, only did this every now and then.
Anyways had the headgasket replaced and it hasnt happened since. whether it was related or not Im not sure. The only thing I can think of is that the coolant was in the combustion chamber, diluting the fuel. What sort of noise does it make?

I think it is a an E series gremlin issue as I have had this same problem ever since I have owned my EL ( 5 years). The thing is it is intermittent and might only happen 1 every 6 months or 4 times in a week

Its hard to describe the sound but it is very different to the normal sound you get when you are starting the car.
How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump? |

How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump? Depends on where you get your fuel pump from.. DIY nothing! +fuel pump, around $40-$150 second hand or new . Its not that hard to replace .... open the boot, look under the carpet, and you should see a black circul, its under there . |

I think I have the same problem...
It wouldn't start, sat there cranking it over for a while after rattling the dizzy about and it MIGHT start... don't know if it was related though.. But when I got it to start, I tested the leads... pulled em off while it was running, and it seems each cylinder is firing... so I don't know if the dizzy is at fault... The only thing I "THINK" it might be is the fuel pump... when I used to turn acc. on, I could hear a 'wherrrr' sound inside the cabin which sounds like its comming from the fuel pump... ... I didn't notice that sound today, but it is still pressurising the fuel rail, and I had someone stuff their head in my boot and said the fuel pump sounded like it was going?!?!? I don't have a pressure gauge to test. So what, fuel pump not dead completely dead, just faulty???? AU2LOW : If I diagnoise the fuel pump to be faulty, where do I get that special tool to remove the securing ring?

It's probably the fuel pump,
thats why it takes longer to start, for the petrol to get in the combustion chamber, and it also explains why the car would turn off while driving as what you were saying |

well best thing to do is check what the car is doing when the fault happens, check fule pressure check injectors are working check there is a crank signal. it almost sounds like a fault where its getting fule vapour lock, which is very unusual for a efi car so proberly isnt, id check fule rail pressure
