You can check EL gearboxes you just have to crawl under the car and pull the filler plug out. Its on the drivers side about half way up from memory. You can see it when you get under.

My EL tranny did the same thing but it was changing quite rough. Lucky it was still under warranty because the tranny needed a reco.

id say check the rod first, although i doubt that will b it.
To check the fluid there is a 16mm plug on the drives side of the auto near the rear about half way up. when u take it out put ur finger in and check the level, it should nearly be coming out the hole. also look at the colour, new it is a light red colour but it will b ok if it is a little dark. if its black, that might b something to do with it.
if it is black see if there is any small pieces of metal in the oil, i doubt u will find any but today at work we found sum, new auto :P

The car is not on gas is it, as gas cars have a habit of this problem if they cough or back fire on gas. Having said that it is not unusal for this to happen in petrol cars as well.

dont take this the wrong way, but an EL is at best 9 years old, so regardless of kilometres age is still an issue. How often has the oil been flushed?

Flush oil + new filter. Maybe need a new inhibitor switch as well.
