I have seen a thread about this before but cant find it

the smell is only when moving
and more when the car goes above 3,000 rpm

the car is a 97 NL,

Leaking fuel pump seal maybe.. have a look under your back seat. Does it happen all the time or mostly when there's a full-ish tank of fuel in the car?

i was going to say that,
it comes more and more as the fuel gets lower.

i dont know where the smell is coming from, i assumed it was from around the engine, but it could be the tank filled with fumes and pushing out through somewhere in the boot area.

is their a tank breether ? could that be blocked up

I get the same thing.. Been meaning to check, but I'm lazy and I just open the windows when it happens. I have read it has something to do with the carbon canister. There was a recall when Ford put the hoses on them the wrong way..

Check front left of engine where purge canister is>> There is a solanoid there that vents to inlet.. Check that no lines are leaking and solanoid working...
Braided fuel lines can do this also.. Unless they are the teflon type...

Both my EB and my parents EB had the exact same problem. I replaced the solenoids in both of the EB's and this fixed the problem.

Ask some non-reflective australians, they'll find in in two seconds flat.

It's an old post but I want to update it for future "searchers".

I finally looked at my carbon canister today. Looked at my fuel pump first and it wasn't leaking.. Although I have heard some people have had fuel smell in cabin because of loose connections in fuel pump.

I discovered that my solenoid was actually the wrong way around. In another thread damage181(can't remember your new name lol) said Ford had a recall about this. Obviously my car didn't get fixed. On the solenoid itself, it says "carb" and has an arrow. But mine wasn't pointing towards the carbon canister.. I'll let you know if it has actually rectified the problem!

I assumed this was the problem as I cross referenced it with this picture in another thread:

If I've made a mistake, plz let me know lol.

Where is this solenoid, is it in the left hand front wheel arch?
