ive had the same problem, new ones are out of the question because of price...
the thing ive found works best is car wax, takes the top layer off and seals it for a while...
ive tried plastic polish and that didnt work.
and every other trim detailer available, which is only good till it rains and then then they go pink again! good luck with it...

Why don't you just get them painted in 2 pack. It wouldn't cost that much if you removed and reinstalled them for the panel shop. If you got them done in hot chilli red, the EL XR/AU1 XR red it should match ok.

I've just about finished putting a second hand set to my XH - they were pretty weathered, but only cost me $10 for the whole set.

-Wet sand with 320/400 paper to remove weathered surface
-polish with a cut and polish for faded paint to bring up a 'low sheen' type finish (you might want to briefly wet sand before this with 600/800 paper to reduce deep scratching)
-finish off with a plastic polish
If you have to pull the strips off, note the colour of the underside - the above method will bring it back to about 95% of it's original colour.

I'm not sure how the weather will affect them, but I'd guess they should only need the occasional going over with plastic polish to maintain them.

Don't paint them - I've tried vinyl paint on some damaged strips, and you can tell the difference.
