Can someone please confirm for me that
Quote: Pin 7 Tacho Input Pulsed Pink / Dark Blue
is the wire I want to connect to a shift light (well it's not actually a shift light, but it's an adjustable rpm switch of the exact same principle) on an EF GLi I6? Last edited by twr7cx on Wed Oct 10, 2007 10:14 am, edited 1 time in total. |

Tacho input wire on the right hand side plug going to the cluster sounds about right

title should say Tach not tech.
anyone know anything about a resistor between the ECU and dash due to the dash not drawing that much current? so i need to take it from the ecu then. |

you can also get the tacho signal from the diagnostics connector (in my first eb i ran a tach from it)

I used the diagnostic tach line for a shiftlight, it didnt seem to be a clean signal, was inconsistent.
Worked okay if I set the shift RPM at under about 3k, but then it became utterly pointless. Might have been a problem with just me, but when I did a search it seemed others had the same problem.

I got off my a*** and installed my Crane HI-6 and just used the tach output from that
I'd say the ECU/Dash is your best bet

Have a read of http://www.fordmods.com/forums/beta-tes ... 39032.html .
Bit long winded, but bear with it. Since your running an EF I6 you will have a clean enough signal if you go off the tacho line, either off the cluster, or the diag port. The dizzy/TFI models are different, but on EL's, you can still use the tacho line - steer clear of the diag port. EA/EB/ED's need to tap into ECU pin 36, unfortunately, their tacho data comes straight off the coil -ve, which isn't a clean signal. So it's best to use the 'SPOUT' signal from the ECU, instead of the ignition coil pulse.

snap0964 - someone on FFAU reckons that I need to take it off the ECU not the cluster as they say there is a resistor somewhere along teh line due to the cluster not needing full power or something like that - do you know anything about that? would make my life easier if I could take it off the cluster...

I've already told you what you should do, that's why I add the link for some background info also.
You also have the ford shop manuals to refer to http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=55169 . Use them to confirm or deny whether a resistor comes into play. I already know the answer - too many people on here want to be spoon fed - I'm trying to get you to use a bit of nouse and nut out the answer for yourself - you have more than enough info to go on to decide.

Hmmmmm... It's got these little funny things in the line which I think are resistors.
EDIT: just looked at the index and they're electrical connectors. Only other thing is a circle where it branches off to the cluster, but it think this is to represent the split at the T intersection. So I think all will be good now with using off the cluster. Cheers. PS being spoon fed is just so easy! |

You're learning .
Once you get some practice at using those wiring diagrams, you'll master them fairly quickly. The shop manuals have excellent info - so use it, don't rely solely on hearsay on what someone says (even me). {USERNAME} wrote: So I think all will be good now with using off the cluster. In the EF's hooking up to the tacho wire at the diag port is the same thing - you can test it there first without chopping any wires.{USERNAME} wrote: PS being spoon fed is just so easy! It is, but you don't learn any new skills - this is what earns you more value in the marketplace, not just here.
