Hey all, looking to convert my EF Ghia to a manual and I can pick up an EB series one box (I think) for about $150. Any reason I should opt for paying more for a later one? As far as I know the only differences are reverse gear synchro (which I don't fully understand lol) and the gear ratios are slightly different. I have a 3.45 diff, how badly is it going to affect my fuel economy? I also heard they don't take abuse as well as the later ones but I don't plan on thrashing the poor thing too hard too often and it's in pretty good condition so that doesn't concern me. Any thing I'm missing? One last thing, would It be a good idea to reinforce the pedal box even if I use a Mal Wood pin? I'm going that route so I don't have to rip the damn thing out but if It's recommended I'll give it a shot.

The 3.45 diff is great with the later T5's i read somewhere, do a search and see what you can come up with

having no reverse gear synchro means if you put it in reverse when the car is moving slightly forward it will crunch like a mofo.
or if you dont put it in a forward gear first when car is stationary, it will also crunch into reverse. thats all i know about it lol.

Yeah deffinantly reinforce the pedal box, they aren't all that strong stock.

and while your there, I would strongly suggest reinforcing your firewall as well, If you can live with no syncho on reverse sounds like this box will suit your needs. EA box had a short 1st ratio, EB onwards had nicer ratios.
And yeah this box will work very nicely with 3.45 gears too.

The EA box had a 3.50:1 first while the later ones had a 3.25:1 first.
The 5th gear ratio is very close, if not the same. If you have a decent cam, low torque at bottom end, then the EA box is good. There is NO synchro for reverse in any T5 box.

Damn, looks like I will be pulling the b**ch of a thing out then and reinforcing it then. How much do auto pedal boxes normally go for just in case I do break it? I don't have a cam, yet, just extractors and exhaust for the moment. I can live without the reverse synchro. I learned to drive manual in my uncles XE ESP where if you go to far while selecting 3rd or 4th you go into the reverse gate and most of the time cant get it out until the car comes to a complete stop Thanks heaps for the help fellas

Wait, so youre saying I can weld it without pulling the damn thing out? I'm thinking if I do that I may set the car on fire lol.

A search would probably explain it alot better than I could but basically it's a pin that goes through an unused hole in the auto pedal boxes so you can fit a clutch to it. The best part is you can do it without having to remove the pedal box in the first place.
