on friday night i was driving on the freeway, suddenly my power steering went, and my battery was showing 10V (alternator) - so i pulled over
the serpentine belt had come off and got twisted and stuck in the tensioner. after 90mins i managed to get the tattered (but intact) belt out of the tensioner and back on...and limped home (got a new belt on now) what im wondering is, is it usual for the EFs to do that? because if it isnt, im gonna have to check out why it came off, so it doesnt occur again. thanks |

wow you seem to have bad luck with cars, too many burnouts maybe?

never had or heard of one coming off before - either crook belt or something out of alignment ? Be worth checking the bearings on the tension pulleys - I'm guessing if they wear too much they'd be sloppy and pull crooked...

Of course its not normal for a belt to throw off .
Could be many things, check for stretched belt, faulty(loose) tensioner, wobbly idlers, pulley alignment etc, something would have thrown it off, but most probably a worn belt, they dont throw off often .

certainly not normal. you need to find out why it did that.
as above possibilities, worn belt, worn idler/tension bearing worn tensioner worn balancer. . . i think you get the idea

)This happened to me just after i bought my car 3 years ago, went through 2 belts witin a week before realizing that the balancer had seperated and the outer had moved forward. The car yard fixed it under warranty but when rebuilding the motor recently, I found that it had also cracked the timing cover below the timing marker. (explained why i couldn't fix the slight oil leak which I thought was the balancer seal )
Just thought it might be worth looking into.

i think it was a worn belt after having a look at it... the groove ribs are f**k... its almost flat now... (From them getting sliced off when it came off) ive checked the tensioner (its tight), the alignment is good. the new belt has been done around 300km so far, including a dyno run... and its still in line, not getting damaged etc..... so i think it was just belt age. thanks guys for the replies |
