I got home tonight and releasied i had a really noisy idle and it sounds as though it is coming from round the pump. I replaced my drive belt about 15000km's ago so i doubt it will be worn out yet. So im thinking it could be.
1 A worn pulley 2 Worn internals (not sure if it has a bearing or a bush) How do i tell if my pulley is worn? Any feedback from you guys would be awesome. Thanks |

Remove the belt and run it for a minute.
If the noise is still there, then its internal. If not, Spin the pulleys manually, and check for wear.

I hope you mean that if the noise is still there then its not the pump, as it doesnt have the belt on, how would it turn? Anyways, those pumps run bushes. What sort of noise does it\car make when idling. Usually if the pump is worn internally, then you will hear this sound alot louder and clearer. Also try idling without the pump cap on. That can act as a sound deadening device sometimes.

I just went back out to the shed then and it was f**k cold to -5 and put a little water on my drive belt and it seems to have quietened right back down again. I m not sure if that was the problem or if it still is something more serious. (Maybe my belt was just a bit dry)

Most likely culprit is the idler pulleys, they're about $20ea from ford.
What i meant before 'internal' meaning engine noise. This way he can establish if its the p/s pump, alternator, idler pulleys and or a/c pump!

Hey guys, how's it all going lately..
Found a dozen pwr steering threads, read a few of them, so but this is the closet one on topic. The drama is that my pwr steering setup is throwing belts.. straight and smooth, and then rev it a bit and, pop, she jumps off the rails inside out. I watched it today as it's come off twice, once with the new belt. The old belt was 8k / 3 mth's age, and looked very close to the new one I fitted today. A mates worked n cam'd XF used to do this back in the day, if you rev'd it past 6ish it would throw the p/s belt off. Refit, drive and don't cain it and it was fine... He removed the pwr steering. I don't rev mine much, unless I need to make a point when accelerating, and even then, it's just kissed 4500 - 5000rpm. Driving behaviour hasn't changed much, but can't figure it. Maybe racing the engine a bit lately. It has got the shudder ghost slightly when making slow parking stunts.. Everything spins without the belt, and I can't feel any play in the tensioner / idler pulley. And about 1 - 2mm max "in / out play" in the p/s pump shaft. Any thoughts? Gonna drop in at Bridgestone tomorrow about it, and ask the guy I know there. |

locknut my mates fairlane also throws belts when he gives it a boot its an NC i think ??? equivalent to ED (1994 model anywho)
he rekons hes tryed tightening it but it still jumps off when he gives it a boot every now and then

i had exactly the same thing. i replaced the idler pulleys yesterday and so far the noise has died off almost completely. theres still a bit coming from the power steering pump but thats how it goes i spose.
Give the idler pulleys a go, see if it doesnt fix it, didnt cost all that much either. |

I'm 99% sure it's the steering pump now. Did it today on the way home, only time I hit rpm all day, and a second later, no p/s.
After refitting it, paid careful attention to the pump pulley, and it's hard to tell while spinning as it's missing a pit of paint; but it may have the slightest wobble, like almost none but the shaft might be bent just enough to make it worse as it rotates faster. Looks like they're about $11X online, will sus it out.. anyone else replaced the pump as a result of this? |

My pulley wobbles back and forward by over four mm? I dropped it when refitting it... Its only thrown one belt, and gets driven hard constantly.
