I have a 5 speed single rail gearbox and i was told that they are no good behind a 250 xflow, i was wondering if it would be possible to modifiy it so it will last behind a 250 xflow?!

You sure about that mate...? Single rails will hold up against a decent 250, no probs. aint worth more than $50 though and only 4spd too. If it`s 5 speed it`s either a 507 (Jap box) or a T5... for your $280, I hope it`s the latter... JAIKAI |

Yep, Borgy 506, Jap box in real terms. The 507 had 5th gear setup, you can find `em in Sigma boxes and refit yourself. I`d go a single rail meself. easier to find than T5 and cheaper too.
Be aware that the 506/507 uses different bell and tailshaft yoke to the others too. JAIKAI |

Ok in the XD & Xe series they came out with 3 differant floor shift boxes.
0503 xxxx box is a 4 speed forward and 1 speed reverse, you can tell this box apart from the others via the side mounting of the gear lever housing. 0506 xxx box is a modified 0507 xxxx box, thus it has the same main box as it 5 speed counter part with 4 forward gears and 1 reverse gear, it also has a modified gear selector. 0507 xxxx box is the unmodified version of the 0506 xxxx, it has the same main box as the 0506 xxxx with 4 forward gears and 1 reverse gear, but in the rear housing it has a fifth gear fitted and the gear lever is not modified. All these boxes are made by Borg Warner and only problem I have ever heard with them is with the 5th gear, do not drive below 70kph other wise you stress the gear to much and it can jump out, once it has done this it will keep doing it. |

Good stuff mate, I typed it all out in similar fashion here ages ago but ppl keep asking. we used to chuck 5th idlers into the 4spd boxes to get a few more bucks for `em through the local wreckers. plenty of Sigmas had `em and no-one ever broke one behind a Sigma...strange but true
Also good for those wanting to buy a cheap XF with 5spd, seen plenty of ppl buy one thinking they were getting a T5 on the cheap and ending up with one of these 507 jobs... JAIKAI |

yer it's a 0507 series, so ya recon it should be alrite coz i do alot of k's and i don't fancy stuck in the middle of no were with a buggerd gearbox! iv got a 0503 4 speed in it atm it seems to go alrite but i recon a fith gear wod make it go just a lil beter over 100ks! also if this box is alrite is it possible to get a bell housing with the cluch release on the left hand side due to the extractors and cat!!

Should be able to... basically any 86 onwards XF will have LHS cable, it made it easy to stay away from the Cat that way. Yeah, drive it normally and you`ll be right as mate, back to 4th under 80km/h...
