How many of you think they actually work?
-Have been detected illiegal? -Discovered a blocked one? -Have a Hi Flow? -'Skined and Gutted' your cat? -Slightly moded your cat? -etc... Know an exhaust fitter and he said that they actually did stop nasty chemicals and such. even though he'll openly admit he doesnt know thing one about how they work, but says they do. and he also said it takes a bit to kill one and that its quite rare that they get blocked these days.

With the amount of crap fuel around these days I'm getting the opposite feedback to your friend from my mates still in the trade. They all say clogged cats are on the increase, dying oxy sensors too. Too many people seem to think they never clog and change from the cat back to save a few bucks, only to slowly strangle their engines.
BTW, they are necessary, unleaded fuel emissions are way more toxic than leaded, science fact not fiction. Paul

stock and gutted cats are the same after a while. it only takes a few runs at full throtle to blow the guts out of stock cats. i had to go hi flow cats as the stock ones were causing a bottle neck efect in the exhaust but in saying that i couldnt point my finger at the cats and say they made a diference as i got new extractors and muffler done at the same time. i guess they are only worth it if they are causing a restriction.

im getting full exhaust so thought for the $200 extra might as well get a hiflow 2.5in :S

$400 for staniless internal/external hi flow wont break up and clog like a ceramic. If your gunna buy one do it right. A friend of a friend got defected on his 200 without one. He got his a** reamed out by the epa. Simply not worth the risk, and f**k breathing in emissions from a car without one, not too good 4 ya!

From what ive seen of high flow cats they are just wank factor. Ive seen dyno figures maybe gain a kilowatt by spending big bucks on high flo cats. Spend your money elsewhere fellas !

I think it depends on what you're putting through it. Most standard 4l 6's aren't overly restricted by a standard cat in good condition. Start modding it though past the basic exhaust/intake stage and then it become worthwhile. |

If all you are doing is exhaust and a mild cam I haven't seen and dramatic results changes from using a hiflow where a stock cat was in good condition. But considering that many stock cats are f**ked (i know mine on my old car was at 180000, rattles = not good) then its probably worth spending the extra $200 or so on a new one with exhaust.

I have a dyno sheet in one of my street machines mags and the high-flow cat gave another 3rwkw, not much of a gain but if your gonna get a full system you better off doing it proply

In my EA i had a stock cat.. then it clogged, so i "stuck it to the man" so to speak.
Now ive got a Hi-Flow in my BA. The EA used to stink so bad without the cat, and it sounded tinny and crappy. But with the Hi-flow, none of those horrible emissions. Im not sure whether the gains are noticeable with the hi-flow, but as stated above, if your going to do something, do it right. |
