Judging by th look it causes the air to swirl which gives a better fuel mixture.

It's actually because the Alan Jones EF/L were supercharged 4.0L I6's. The blower sits on the drivers side and so a different air box is required obviously due to the different air intake piping.
I believe that the top bit with the sticker is the snorkel that sits above the radiator. Then the pipe opening you can see would be the exit which points towards the drivers side of the car were the blower is.

You don't have any pictures of the engine bays do you to show how the plumbing with the air box works? Or am I right in that these airboxs are specifically for the blown ones?

No engine bay pics unfortunately.
I'd say you're on the money though, i can't see how that airbox would work unless it was for the s/c one.

certainly could be modified though to work n/a

looks to have larger volume to suit a pod filter maybe?
