hi all
I own a 1992 XF Ute, when I turn on the high beams one of the low beams cuts out. Now some people say the lows are meant to cut out when the highs are turned on, but mine have always stayed on. anyone got any ideas as to why it cuts out? |

The lows *are* meant to cut out when you put on high beams.
The real question is, why yours ever stayed on in the first place. |

mine have always stayed on- I posted a message on another site about the lights and it turned into an argument about whether or not they are meant to stay on

Low beams are definately meant to go out when highs are selected.

If there is any doubt, pull the switch apart, it is relatively simple and you can easily see where the contacts touch for each position.

are you sure? unless your talking about the two-stage globes in the low beam, where the low beam stage turns off and the high beam stage turns on?

On an XF the main Globe is a H4 which is a 60/55 halogen globe and is NOT meant to go out when switched to high beam.....Go to your local Autobarn and ask for a standard H4 replacement bulb.Or be really daring and upgrade to a optic glow set of blue globes....

Low beam DOES go out when you select high, why would you have a 60 w and a 55w element from the same globeon both sides of the car all lit up at once, plus the other 55w in the driving ligh part of the headlight. Grab a test light and try it on any xd to ed headlight(they all run h4s) Looking at the back of the globe hold the middle terminal at 12 oclock. Now LH terminal is earth, middle is low beam, RH is low beam. Trust me guys i do this for a living.

replace the H4 globe, one filament is meant to go out and the other light up....
if its going out completely you have a fractured filament in the globe |
