Hi am going to throw a manual in my efII xr8 "eecV" and have a few questions and yes have searched seems 99.9% is for 6cyl.
1. will any manual ed-au fit or ef/el only?
2. scince the 8 has seperate tcm unit what mods are needed to the comp if any? or how much and where from for a efII manual ecu? any help apreciated thanks

EF only. Not even an EL ECU will work as their thermos have only one plug, EF have two. A manual EF XR8 Manual ECU will cost you a fair bit unless you're lucky. The car will run fine with auto ecu, but thermos will be running full time. For more information on how to trick a V8 ECU, refer to the thread below:

afaik you will need a v8 box. 6 cyl has different bellhousing and different input shaft.

lol I read wrong.. Had a few drinks when I read your post. I meant that ECU wise, only an EF Manual V8 ECU would work properly.

Box wise, EB to EL V8 boxes will all work, but better you find an EF-EL conversion. Otherwise you'll find you'll be buying lots of other little pieces. 6 cylinder boxes as bluecube said won't work.
