Gents (and ladies) - my mate has recently bought an XW Falcon from an old couple out west in QLD. He was looking at doing some work on the engine and discovered there was a 302 windsor sitting in there. He's asked me this question and I had no idea so I thought I would ask here to see if anyone knew:

Was this a standard engine in the XW?? The old couple are claiming they bought it like that from new, however when checking up the engine number (5R12367O) nothing came up with Ford.

Does anyone know? Or have they replaced the engine in this?

yes, the XT to XY had the windsor in them unless they had the 351 (mainly XY, but some XW's had the clevo)

i have a couple of windsors from around that vintage and the engine numbers look different to the one that your mates got. the one out of a '69 fairlane(same as xw) starts with GH then 4 numbers and ends with C. the one out of an xy starts with JG37LS then 5 numbers and ends with K.
the car may have had a change over reco motor and they used an imported block.

An early XW had Windsors and the later ones had Clevo's. Eg. Phase 1 XW GT had the 351W, and the Phase 2 XW GT had a 351C.
The engine code on the Ford plate will be 'Y' for 302W.
There are 12 Model codes for the XW.

18931....................sedan
18933....................500 sedan
18935....................Futura sedan
18937....................Fairmont sedan
18938....................GT sedan
18939....................GTHO sedan
18961....................wagon
18963....................500 wagon
18967....................Fairmont wagon
45971....................Ute
45973....................500 ute
45981....................Van

Also for trans codes for automatics are 'P', 'R', and T'bar shifter, 'B'

Hope this sorts it out for you..
