Noise started today, a whining noise. Cant pinpoint where it is, kinda sounds like its coming from the front of the rocker cover, power steering pump, and idlers??

I don't wanna be a b**ch, but thats the same noise my car made when it dropped the Aux shaft retaining bolts.

Get it looked at, even probe it and try to see if theres any end play.

The whine (in my case was the chain eating the timing cover with the added end play)

Fortunately my car seized on cranking when the retainer broke and got caught in the chain resulting it ate my timing cover/chain/crank cog, and the little allen key bolts holding the aux retainer.

Lets hope this isn't the case, cos its a full days work. In my case it was engine out.

Take off the drive belt, and make sure its not chain related.
If it is, don't ignore it, cos if its anything like mine was, I was very lucky it didn't fail at 80kph in top gear, it coulda taken more than the chain out!

Again, lets hope its not!

Sus out the plastic chain guides too, they have a tendency to break!

I imagine the alternator, and water pump can go without the belt for a minute - so, like old mate before said, maybe try running it without the belt.

Could be the pwr steering? I honestly dunno, cuz I haven't heard a shagged one.

more than likely is a bearing noise from idler pulley or belt tensioner. - running w/out belt will confirm it in that case. Also when you drop the belt off try spinning both idlers by hand - if on the way out you should hear something then.

I put my ear on the rocker cover and it almost definitely sounds like its inside the timing cover, maybe chain.

But i will try without the belt, but my handbook doesnt make much sense to me.... how to remove the tension on the belt to remove?

I had similar noise in my engine earlier this year, after removing the water pump- turned out the impellers were f**ked. Replaced- problem and noise rectified-

what I am about to say may sound very stupid to some people BUT the only reason I found this out, as it is easily mistaken for timing chain noise(coz of the location) I put a half inch steel rod FIRMLY on top of the water pump housing(round 40cm long)- had an assistant rev the engine, then put my ear up against the end of the rod...and the audible sound is amplified obviously -alot. So I knew it was the Water pump. BUT IF U ARE NOT CONFIDENT WITH DOING THIS DONT DO IT!!! COZ IF BAR CATCHES ON PULLEY, HALF UR HEAD COULD GET RIPPED OFF ID SAY...

Not silly at all. My mechanic diagnosed my water pump issue that way once. He used a long big guage screw driver, shaft to pump, handle to ear, works the same way

I agree not silly at all, common practice but as you cautioned like anything to do with a running motor you need to be aware of the dangers.
