Its easy enough to get the acutal stripes off but what would be the best thing for removing the left over residue? I tried some solvent s**t thats in the shed but it didnt work that well. I was thinking metho but would that harm the paint at all?

You'll probably need to take the car to your local car signage place. The adhesive they use to hold stripes onto cars is very tough and needs special chemicals to get off properly.

Since you live in SA, I'd recommend you try ProLine signs on Main North Road, near Gepps Cross, Ph: (08) 8349 6002. They put the stripes on my XR6 and did a good job, and also mentioned they've got all the gear to get them off easily too.
