Cruising along tonight.... Voltmeter drops from 13 to 9 volts, jumps back to 13, slowly back to 9, over about 5 minutes....

No Battery light...

If the belt's OK, not slipping and the tensioner is not jamming, that would be the prime suspect.

Check for a bad/dirty connection with the plug on the back. Had this happen on my EF.

Got home last night, voltmeter stayed on 9-10 volts.... shut off engine, and it wouldn't start, (obviously)

NRMA reckons it is the alternator, but when the NRMA autosparkie arrived, he tested the alternator and battery, and reckoned they were ok, meaning it might be intermittent.... damn it.

Hopefully it starts this morning, and I can get it to an auto electician near work...

Alternator, Supplied and fitted from NRMA autoelectriical was $389... sound about right?

jesus thats pricy, i paid 400 to get one fitted to my 300zx (they are under the power steering pump real pain in the @ss to get to) you should just fit it yourself if you can... or ask your autoelec, he should be much cheaper..

Yeah... Pricey because he's mobile, and does it where you are. I don't have the skills to fit an alternator unfortunately.

I dropped it at an auto-elec here at work this morning.... its still intermittent, but was pretty consistantly intermittent (if that makes sense) this morning, so I'm hoping they can find out whats wrong.

Even an autolec should be much, much cheaper than that, plus he should be able to give your car a more thorough examination than an NRMA subbie trying to flog overpriced alternators. It's not rocket science to fit them.

Auto-elec ended up replacing the alternator.
They bench tested and it was not working well, and also contaminated with Power Steering fluid (from a leak I had)

Car is running much better now.

Good to hear you've got it sorted.
Cheers
