The smart lock doesnt always allow the starter to engage. A light tap at the panel on the left hand side of the steering wheel (BEM) underneith usually gets the starter working.

Is there an easy fix (perhaps a poor contact?).

I forgot to mentin thathte issue is heat related. On cool days the smart lock works fine. On hot days is when the starter wont engage with out encourage, emt.

Also, I believe that winter humidity causes the system to shuddr now and then.

The smartlock module can be repaired, if you want to send it up to Perth for a couple of days, I can sort it out for you.

*slightly* off topic, but mine is doing a similar thing when driving. my question is - can smartlock cut an already running engine?

it might pay to check the basics - ECU and fuel pump relay, TFI module etc. When it does stop, do you have any spark or injector pulse?

when it stops, i'm driving. it's like an instant cut of power (if accelerating, the cut of power is enough to throw you forward), the smartlock light comes on and the ECON light for the auto transmission comes on - but i have a factory manual.

the tacho drops to 0 as if the motor isn't turning over, but with the clutch engaged it is turning over.

being an EF, it has coilpacks, so TFI can be ruled out.

ECU tests the other day produced code 837 for KOEO and 538 KOER

tis certainly a weird one!

My ef II Fairmont wagon is doing the same thing. Have to hit the dash everytime I get in it so it will start. it has a (green) high series.

what usually goes wrong with the bem's inside?
I pulled mine out last night and couldn't find any dry solder joints. I couldn't really see anything out of the ordinary.
I just put it back on and its still doing it.

I read somewhere you can bridge the 2 red/blue wires together and bypass it all together.
Has anyone done this? Im scared to try it incase I wreck something.

It feels like i'm driving uncle bucks car :)
