Okay guys, no s**t here ill go from the start.
Went to a mates house this evening and he lives near a dirt road..I decided to go do a u-turn down the end and gave it a flogging (not sure how high the revs went but i think it jumped of the limiter or close to 5k) anyway..im driving back on normal road and i hear a noise coming from the motor..pull over pop the hood and its sounding like a skreeching noise as if something was rubbing on something else. Just before i pulled over i checked all gauges..heat fine, fuel fine, oil pressure f**k..its on the red line but jumped with the revs.. I let it sit for a good 30 minutes mates getting p****d so i started it and the noise and oil pressure went back to normal.. I noticed on the way home, in some spots when idleing the noise would come back for a second then dissapear and the pressure was a little low for my likeing.. So, what do you guys think..is she f**k or what? I changed oil, filter and coolant two weekends ago and the oil level was fine (but f**k hot) Should i keep driving it or will that do more damage.. |

i wonder if the alternator s**t itself? oil gauge can be affected by lower volts.

hmm interesting..would that be making a noise but?
Also the car was restarted 3-5 times after it happend and the volts stayed at 12.. The fact that the noise comes on when the car is at low revs is worrying me. The oil pressure is/was way to low |

it could be the idler bearings for the a/c or power steering belts if its screeching.
Dont trust the oil gauge on the dash, my eb always used to sit on the red but a mecahical gauge showed plenty pressure. |

drain the oil and see if theres any thing in there besides oil

jjohnno,
66 coupe's thoughts about the pulleys is worth trying before you dump the oil. It will only take a little time and effort to remove all the belts, test the idlers by spinning them. If it grinds, sticks or wobbles replace it. Then add a belt, aircon first, one at a time and tension it. Start and idle the car to listen for the noise after you add each belt. If no noise add the next belt etc. Sometimes idlers seem ok but show up noisy under load. While listening to the belt idlers in the engine bay you may even be able to better identify where the noise is if not the idlers. Paul

the reason i suggested idler pulleys is because it is very common for them to go, and squeal when they are nearly seized up. Other things that could cause a squeal is the alternator belt if its loose, but it would generally be worse after a cold start, or with a load, ie headlights / high beams / rear demister all on at the same time.
Worst case would be timing chain related - which may also be the cause of low oil pressure, but check the easy things 1st. Where did your oil gauge used to sit? |

I have heard belts squeel before and it was not the noise my car was making..
more like metal on metal..coming from the front of the engine(timing chain maybe?) I have spoken to a few people and they think that the oil must have got pumped into one section of the motor ..?could that be right? |

try to pinpoint the sound, it could very well be a broken timing chain guide that has fallen into a place that the chain will grind on it.
To pinpoint where the sound is coming from or to see if one of your bearings are buggered grab a long screw driver or any other long thin device and put it close to the moving part and put your ear on the handle and cup your hand around your ear. This will work like a stethoscope and will help you work out where the noise is coming from. Listen for some kind of grinding or wearing noise. I like the current suggestions (any bearing or timing chain / guide) and I have heard of all of them happening, it is hard to tell the exact sound you are talking about tho. |

sounds like a similar problem i used to have, it ended up being an additive i put in the oil that caused it
