Hey, can someone please give me a decent guide on how to check the cam timing on an EL before we put the head back on? Think it might have slipped a bit on the idler gear (for want of a better word) if the balancer is on TDC and the top sprocket is in the right place (3mm above the top of the head when the head is back on), does that mean it's DEFINATLEY ok? could the idler gear be out of whack?

you need to make sure that the rotor button is pointing to number one spark post,,if it isn't then the timeing will be out.
plus the line on the cam sprocket can be anywhere from level with the head to 3mm above.

if the crank is TDC and the cam pully mark is 3mm- level with the head the cam timming is ok. One tooth out on the cam pully will move the mark below the top of the head or more then 3mm above.
if it's only the aux pully that is out, you can adjust the ignition timing to correct it. You may have to move the dizzy a tooth to get it right though |

Get yourself a Gregorys service book. I use one for my XH, and 99% of the info and tips are spot on. Always check your TDC with a dial indicator, as the crank key can be off by one or two degrees.
If you want to have more adjustment for your cam timing, get a Romac vernier adjustable top gear. Much easier to adjust, and no chance of dropping the chain or skipping a tooth.
