Hi Guys,

I have an 10/90 EA Fairmont Ghia with 4 speed Tranny and I'm halfway though putting a low KM ED motor into it. Both the cars have EEC-IV on the air box so does that make the computers identical? is there any benefit in fitting the ED computer? (I grabbed it when I grabbed the motor).. Also would the ED one be smartlock? (because the EA definately isn't)

Anyway, onto the real question.... I'm warming over the engine while swapping it.. To that end, I've sourced an ED XR6 camshaft from ebay... also found some extractors and a 2.5 inch exhaust... I'm halfway done building a custom aluminum air box with K&N cone filter and relocated air pickup for cooler intake temp...

According to my manual, the ED std motor had 8.8:1 compression and the XR6 had 9.1:1 compression.. I read somewhere that they make a really thin head gasket for the AU that ups the compression nicely..

Will the AU gasket work on the ED motor? has anyone done it?
I figure with my existing mods, plus the AU gasket (assuming its possible), plus possibly running water injection and advancing timing, and running premium, I should have quite a fast ride...

Has anyone already done any of this stuff and if so what results did you get?

Hi Mate the EA and ED are different beasts some what different computer because of smartlock... but the EA computer as long as it is Multi Point you won't have any dramas...

from what i have read that the au gasket will fit on with no dramas (well none i have read)..

read the sticky about mods to the I6...

Just found this line:

Using the Ford Genuine AU head gasket will result in a small compression boost when used in E-series, and are also more reliable.

can't believe my searches didn't lead me there...

Were all ED's smartlock? This one was a Ghia as well so I'm guessing it was... I'd like to use the ED computer as it's probably got upgraded mapping but I read somewere I'd need a smartlock bypass module.. Where would I find one of those?

(for that matter, is it hard to upgrade to smartlock?)

many thanks

OK, guess I'm sticking with the EA ghia computer until I figure out how to use the ED ECM.... I don't suppose that there is anyway to find out if the mapping is changed? if it isn't then I'll be wasting my time making it fit..

many thanks,

afaik the maping only changed in ef/el due to the different manifold.

i would just keep using the ea one.
unless you got a ed xr6 ecu then i would get a smartlock by pass module otherwise there isnt much difference from ea mpfi to ed mpfi ecu's except for smartlock.

Thanks Troyman,

standard computer it is.... shame, the guy I bought my cam from just sold his XR6 computer for 120 on ebay....

I've just noticed that both the engine mounts were gone on the old motor (which explained the action in reverse) and on the new motor, the exhaust side mount is gone..... were the E series fords known for this?

Sign, unless Repco are open today, I'm guessing I'm not fitting the new motor.. (I had it up in the engine crane just now when I noticed the mount.)
