I've noted that recently the Barra 230 V8 has been removed as an option from the Falcon, due to low demand.


I'm curious to know if anyone on Fordmods has a Barra 220 or 230 V8, in any variant, from the XT to the Ghia, and what they think of it, as far as maintainence, running costs, and response to modification goes?

Also curious as to the general experience of anyone who has had to maintain or Service one of these engines.
Are they quite rare to crop up for servicing? Are there any known little niggly or common things that have cropped up on them, or tricks and traps when servicing?

I'm not looking at buying... now at least :-) but I am curious about them as it seemed a very under-advertised and under selected option (also quite dear, at $5k over the list price) but also an engine that seemed to have some potential.

We have had a few here at work. Good cars, no worse than the 6 on fuel, and Aussie Car Enhancements got one into the 12's with little mods

I've heard they respond very well to mods. Some headers, exhaust, airbox, and piping and a tune, should see 200-220rwkw and low 13's or thereabouts.
My old man has one in a Ghia. They're alright on fuel. As Brett above said, they're no worse than a 6 cylinder.
The only thing i've found so far is that the spark plugs being irdium ones, cost a lot, but only need to be done every 100,000kms. But some guys say to change them at 60-80,000kms to avoid them breaking when removing them.

Apart from that, they seem like a nice motor for everyday driving. They do it so easily. Just need another 1,000rpm before the limiter cuts in though!

Just don't try to change the spark plugs on em if you dont have to!

the spark plugs arent that bad. Tyre early model OHC V6 explorers. They are pricks for spark plugs.

About the only commin issue is the VCT Phasors on them get noisy, but there shouldnt be any left that havent been repaired by now.

Spark plugs are a problem on the 3v engines, there is a way to do it which lessens the chance of breaking them. Craig at ACE spent a good half a day when he had to change mine, poor guy haha (and that was at about 75k). They're not a bad engine and love mods to em, especially breathing mods, really livens them up. I don't know how every says they get about the same economy as a 6 out of em, i'm getting about 15-16l/100km everyday driving without putting my foot down?

Our 6's here at work get about 18-22l/100, but they only do stop start stuff in the city

I have 2 of the mod motors here, one 5.4 and one 4.6, found both to be fantastic engines, the torque the 5.4 has is brilliant, and both use between 15-25 litres depending on what you are doing with them.
Love a flash, love exhaust and induction work.
Great motors, and if you ever get the chance to give a 4.6 the berries, grab it, what a revvy little motor.

Sounds good so far.
Fuel economy would be an issue, but it is a V8 after all :-)

I'm guessing with a nice induction and exhaust system, that would improve considerably.

My old man gets good economy out of his. He does pussyfoot it a lot though.
He does have to drive 20km to work a few days a week, but its not all highway driving.
I'm pretty sure his average every tank is about the high 10's to low 12 l/100km mark.

It was using about 1 l/100km more than his old EL Ghia 6 cyl though on the hwy. But then again he swore he got less than 8l/100km cruising up to qld in it a few months back.

I wish mine was like that. The best i've done was driving to adelaide on a cold morning, i got 9.3l/100km @ 100km. Then with the a/c on at @ 110km i was getting around 11.4l/100km.

96ghia, the only time i noticed the economy get better after those mods was on the freeway. Everyday driving it got worse, once you hit the loud pedal you just don't wanna stop :)

my one ba v8 fairmont ghia is converted into lpg with impco new lpg injection system specially designed for v8,never worry the fuel again.it runs about the same power and fuel consumption.

Now thats interesting.
I didn't think there would be enough 3V engines that there would be a Gas demand, (although I forgot LTD and G8 Hire Cars)
