Hi,

I have an EA Ghia with BTR 4spd tranny..

Was rummaging in my spares cupboard and found a brand new transmission cooler.

Never having fitted one of these before, and finding no instructions, I am appealing to you good folk for help.

I'm assuming that I just need to cut the steel pipe that exits fluid from the radiator (sending it back to the tranny) and use the rubber transmission hose I have here to put the cooler inline with that pipe and then mount it in front of the condensor?

Which of the pipes is the one to cut though, the top one (where it bolts into the radiator) or the bottom one...

I guess I'm asking what the tranny fluid flow is on those pipes..

any help would be really great..

thanks

Franki

I didn't even cut mine, just bent them a bit to put them on an angle (make sure there's plenty of clearance for the drive belt) and both inline with the new cooler, forget the radiator altogether.

But why bypass the built in cooler in the radiator? What advantage do you have by doing that (except for in the BA's were I've been told there is a known problem of the radiator leaking into the tranny cooler)?
Aside from preventing that happening surely running in the built in cooler has 2 advantages. Firstly it provides extra cooling in that you can run the fluid through this to cool it a bit prior to running through the external cooler for further cooling. Secondly, the heat from the radiator helps warm the fluid up when cold start - it's not good for the tranny to run too cold.

The rule is, always leave the radiator cooler inline. The best answer is probably to have the coolant go from tranny to radiator, then to front mount cooler.

If you just happen to be sitting static in Traffic on a 40 deg day your tranny *will* overheat in the end if you dont use the radiator cooler as well.

Yup, thats what I thought....

On a really hot day stuck in traffic, you could over heat with just the cooler as it won't be getting much airflow..

The way I look at it,, the radiator takes the edge off the heat.. and the cooler brings it down further..

Problem is that none of the posts thus far have told me which is the pipe that returns the "cooled" fluid to the tranny.

anyone?

ta

cheers

Well - you could always crack one, turn the car over and see which side the fluid pours out of....

Yeah, I thought of that.. but figured someone must have done it..

Tranny fluid is 39 dollars per 4 liters (takes 10L to filll up) and I've just put brand new T95 in it..

You could always join the lines up using plastic hose and hose clamps for now, put it high with an air bubble in it, and crank the car. 100% recovery ;)

.. and you can see which way its flowing. Wouldnt do it for too long, but it wont hurt for a few seconds.

Look under the front of the car and you should see the two trans cooler pipes running across the front under the radiator. On the EF/EL/EA/EB falcon, you will see a brass joint in the middle of it thats the one to use
