Hi, I just got my hands on some pacemaker extractor's for my el xr6 off an eb, anyways ive already got a genie 2.5 from cat back and about to fit the extractors, know my question is should i gut my cat or wait and save another couple hundred for a high flow? or can i just leave it standard? and another quick question how much is a gasket so i can fit the extractors? cheers

Yes gut the cat, chop the springs in half, and pour Jim Beam into the throttle body

Gasket is around $10

you can leave it standard if you wish. If may restict a little bit, but from memory the standard cat is 2.25" and you would likely only upgrade to a 2.5" hi-flow (to match your exhaust).
Do not gut the cat as its illegal. And it sounds s**t.

I would wait and save, as said above gutting it is illegal and it sounds crap. Sounds like its very hollow, bit like a holden

i wouldnt worrie about changing the cat untill its stuffed.

i have a mate who works in a exhaust shop and some of you will be shocked to hear that in most cases they dont fit a proper high flow cat.
if you have a 2" system and you ask for a high flow cat they will just fit a 2 1/4 or 2 1/2" cat than yes it flows more therefore its a high flow cat lol...

i have a std 2 1/2 inch cat on mine (which is a high flow cat for a ricer) :lol: :lol:

in my opinion you dont really need a high flow cat unless you have forced induction or have plenty of engine work.

there is no point gutting the cat! it will be slightly louder and you will get a horible smell from the exhaust.

ive done it before and there was no gain in performance!
if anything the car was slightly slower due to the hollow cat causing turbulance slowing down flow..

if you gut the cat smell the exhaust afterwards and tell us if its different :roll:

no cat on an unleaded car f**k the environment. Plus you won't notice a difference unless your current cat is rooted.

Just recently put a 1636 cam in my car, but ever since, its been hunting like crazy.
Tried a heap of s**t, but still didnt fix it.
I tried smacking the cat, see if it rattled. Still nothing.

Yesterday, i went and installed a hi-flow metalcat.
So so so much better. Doesnt hunt, sounds even louder, flows much better and the smell doesnt hang out the front of hte car anymore.

So id say its worth saving for a hi-flow :) Or try a AU cat ..

You probly blew your standard cat to bits, dunno if its true but i heard if you flatten your car a fair bit the standard cat dosn't last long at all.

Did you measure 'true' TDC from piston 1 when you installed it?

Balancer mark usually can & DOES slip to a certain extent. The cam gear must be set within 3mm above the head, whilst piston no.1 is @ TDC.

I recently found my balancer has slipped 12mm away from where its supposed to, not enough to be mislead to set the cam up wrongly, but any more and the cam wouldve been set on the wrong tooth, trying to match the incorrect TDC mark......

just a thought.....

I took the cat out when I put on an exhaust and I think it sounds awesome. Nice power increase too.
(don't know if thats the bigger exhaust or no cat or both)

you wont get a power increase without a cat imo..... unless its a high HP beast....

have you seen the insides of a cat? basically hollowed out with some 'fly mesh' in the middle.....

you won't notice a differencee between having a cat on or off on the road if yours isnt rooted or isn't the correct size. On the dyno it might be 2 tenths of f**k all improvement without it.

iv got dyno sheets of an AU6 with a catback, then a catback with pacemaker extractors, then the full system with the highflow cat. The cat gave it an extra 2.8rwkw

Yeah everything was installed properly.
What i was getting at was, the hi-flow cat fixed my hunting issue.
I think the computer was having problems finding the correct idle as the exhaust wasnt flowing properly.
But with the new cat, it sits perfectly on idle.
