G'day everybody
I have an 92 EBII Fairmont which (usually) is a great car.......but........in the last couple of days it's developed the bad habit of not starting. I turn the ignition on and......nothing......no cranking..............nothing. The problem originally raised its ugly head when we had those really hot (over 40C days in Melbourne around Christmas), and until today, the car has always started after I shift the trans from park to neutral and back again......a few times I've had to let it sit for a couple of minutes though. I just tried to start it and this time it won't come good. If it's the inhibitor switch can it be bypassed (and anybody know how much a replacement would cost and whats involved in installing it?) Any ideas? All suggestions greatly appreciated.......thanks a lot |

hit the top of the dash while holding the key in the start position, if that makes it start, the fault is in the smartlock module and it may be repairable.
If its the inhibitor switch, moving the tbar from P to N should make it kick over. |

Sorry I didn't reply earlier...just wanted to say thanks.....it worked and I'm mobile again
Any idea what could be wrong with the smartlock and cost to repair? |

Just turns faulty for some reason, I personally wouldn't bother repairing one, just go to your local wreckers and purchase another.

theres a good chance the replacement one will have the same fault, its a very common problem with these models. you should be able to find someone locally to do it, even a tv repair shop, just tell them to resolder the majority of the pcb as dry joints are the cause of the problem. |

Hey my mums ED GLi is having the same prob, u give it a tap under the panel near the handbrake lever, and away it goes, im sure it's the bem module, what is involved in repairing it, just simple soldering or major work? What part do u repair? It's starting to get quite annoying...Vito.

Does any body know if a faulty smartlock will cause the car to stall once its running?
and where is the smartlock PCB located? |

no, smartlock will not cause the car to stall once its running, the smartlock module is located above the handbrake on EB/ED and below the cluster on the left hand side on EF/EL
