i have an EL XR6, where is the oil pump located, is it a hard job and what is involved putting a new high volume pump in. if the sump has to come off i may aswell get the oil drain line put in at the same time?

Pump is practially below the oil filter inside the sump.
Sump HAS to be removed.
Either the engine has to come out, or lifted up to remove the K-Frame.

Its do-able, but will need radiator out, all fluids etc would be a good idea, welsh plugs, all hoses, meh, i did mine last year.

i got mine changed when i got my engine reco'd

Yep the proper way is to get the engine out due to the cross member being in the way...Vito

where di u get the pump and how much did it set u back..

does it have any advantages over the original pump?

i dunno about price, my mechanic got it, places like bursons ect sell it.
my car had oil problems, the light would flash red saying had no oil and my car burnt alot of oil, now the problem is fixed. and we didnt take the engine out, just lifted the engine higher and took the sump out like that.

It can be done in the car. Have done heaps of them. Takes about 4hrs.

Use an above engine stand. Goes from inner guard across to the other side. It has an adjustable screw in the middle. Hook a chain onto the engine lifting links and take the strain.
Undo the engine mounts at the K frame, undo the the nuts that hold the K frame to the body ( the ones that are got from up top, 4 ( 18mm)of them, they face straight up.). Undo the steering shaft bolts and remove the shaft. Don't worry about them lining up again, they can only go on one way.
Disconnect steering pressure switch wire.
Undo the bolt that holds the steering lines & tranny cooler lines ( have 12mm heads).
Hoist the vehilce, drain the oil, remove the alloy g'box braces, take out the lower bolts for the shockies. Unclip the main power cable from the K frame for the starter motor.
Loosen lower control arm inner bolts ( do not remove)
Undo the 4 remaining nuts ( 18mm ) for the K frame ( facing down).
The K frame will drop, leaving enough room to get the sump out when undone.
2 little brackets will fall out too, from each side ( they have studs on them that face up, these were undone from the top), you'll need 2 rubber bands, place the brackets back in place and put the rubber bands on top across the studs to hold them in place when the K frame goes back in.
Use a genuine sump gasket ( 1 piece), make sure the sump is clean, and glue the gasket to the sump with Contact Cement, leave it set for about 1/2 hour. Use 515 to seal the top of the gasket but only at the ends.
