Take the Max Ellery book and chuck it in the bin, Gergory's is a lot more accurate.
I'd suggest a Clevo, you can't really get much easier than that... timing marks go dot to dot, con rods are numbered, arrows cast in pointing which way is front etc...

Chuck both the max ellery and the gregorys in the bin and get a genuine Ford manual.

I'll second that. I have factory manuals for every Ford I have ever owned. Get a crappy X series sedan with a f**k 302 clevo. That wont break the bank. It's exactly the same as the 351 (cept crank and rods) and you can learn on that. Or, just go and buy a 302C from the wrecker or the dozen people on here that i am sure would have one that will never be used. There are heaps around and in non rebuilt form they are virtually worthless. Be suprised if you blow more than $200. It's a pity your not in SA, as I am giving away a 302W (roller lifter EFI block).

Even the EFi early E series 6s are easy to work on, especially the EA 3.9CPi, what ever you do do not touch an EFI 5.0 Windsor, jesus putting a cam in 1 was a major mission (especially when 3 mates help you pull it apart and are no where to be seen when you have to put it together).
250 cross flow is good to learn on, not a massive difference to a 302, it all works similar but in different places. When you have the motor in pieces talk to a machinist, get them to show you how to mic up the bores, crank and cam, all good stuff to learn. Some really interesting things to research are cam timing (playing with cam gears with different number of teeth) and porting/polishing. Max elerys books are absolutely useless, i found that 1 out at midnight with a car in 2 million pieces. |

I learnt heaps by pulling apart a 3.9 cpi 6. I have also partially pulled apart an ecotech engine but found it to be a bit of a pain.

Go the Cleveland !!! A nice XD or XE even with the good old 302 c.The 302 clevo can always be made into a 351 (or 393 or 408 etc) with a crank and rod change, you can build the engine up for that fairlane u want or just take apart and do a standard rebuild of the 302 ,choice is yours...Vito.

Actually a 5.0L or 5.8L or 7.5L EFI engine is just as easy as any of the others. It's just a f**k intake for chrissake!
