hi guys
has anyone needed to lube there clutch cables and what do you guys use? ive used engine oil and trans fluid on many cables on many cars with no re accuring problems. ive had a sticky clutch cable for a while now and when it was new it didnt seem really well lubricated.. anyway i didnt bother lubing it. it had been 1 year and the inner part of the cable had a dirty grey apearence like grease and the cable was tight so at this stage i just lubed it up with trans fluid and it felt as good as new. its been 12 months since i lubed the cable and now its almost seized.. so i just went out and brought a new cable.. and it looks like its lubed with white dry lube grease? are the actually ment to be re-lubricated? has any one tried dry lubes like graphite powder?? this is the only manual ive had clutch cable issues with.

I just use WD40/INOX to lube up the cable. Seems to work. I try and lube it whenever I service my car. Since the car is up, I just pull the cable off the transmission side and lube it from above the car.
Never thought about using tranny fluid or motor oil to lube it. phong =P~

i did try wd40 the other day and it did free it up but also felt very notchy it actually started creaking..
and yes ive already repaired the pedal box and firewall when the cable was replaced.. although the firewall is in need of surgery again because of the clutch cable being so tight.. now i got a new cable (again) i was curious what everyone else used.. |

got some quick directions on lubing the clutch cable? Does the outer part slide straight off?

un fortunatly no. its pretty time consuming trying to dribble oil down the cable while moving the cable in and out.. considering my firewall is in need of repair ive also made a new re-enforcement plate. ill put together a doco once im finished incase anyone wants to re-enforce or repair there firewall.. i used a un dammaged ef to mock it up on. and i used the artline as a dowl to line it up with the original pipe here is a pic of what i got so far

If the cable is too close to the exhaust, this will cause premature wear/damage.
I use "Wurth HSS 2000". Its in a spray can, it is fully synthetic grease, but as it comes out of the nozzle, it is very runny like water, and as the carrier fliud evapourates, it leaves a very sticky film, that is water proof, even in salt water. Its very expensive, about $35 a can. I use this on mine, and on my M/bike cables too.

cool
i have used motorcycle chain lube on my bike clutch cables but never on a car clutch cable.. ive never heard of Wurth HSS 2000 where do you get it from?? is it a automotive lube or industrial lube. the cable is fairly close to the extractors and there is no aparent heat damage but your right there is still a lot of heat there.. chears |

Heres a pic, but the can is old, so may be slightly different packaging/printing/lable, but same good stuff.

try lanolin,you can get as a spray.have used it on lots of stuff even fishing reels,but can be messy.

The melting point of Lanolin is way too low. It would run out of the cable in a week. The HHS 2000 is unaffected by temps ranging from -35 to +200 dgs C. Also resistant to water jet, brine, many acids & alkalis. Leave the Lanolin for the leather jackets & boots.

ill see if i can get some.. its all back together now. the clutch feels fantastic with a new cable and the repaired firewall (again) there was a few spots on the old cable that had rubbed on the x member through the black plastic causing any lube i put down the cable just ran out. thanks guys.............. |
