I'm thinking of getting rid of the old clutch fan on my ED and fitting EF-EL twin thermo fans. Now, My question is......
Is it possible to wire up the thermo fans so that they come on when you start the car up so they are running full time until the ignition is turned off?

yes just instead of wiring up a thermatic switch to the relay wire it off accessory (cig lighter or something) so that they are constantly on....which is kind of silly cos then the car is gonna take ages to get to operating temperature.
you are best off doing it the right way with a davies craig thermatic switch in the radiator system. |

Akademiks is spot on, the fans are so efficient that your engine will never get to operating temperature. This is not the best on MPFI engines. Our EB2 has only has one of the EL fans run by the Davies-Craig switch and a relay ATM and I have a manual switch on the second. It rarely needs to be used, only when crawling along on a hot day. I've been too busy to finish wiring it in properly and only tell you this to highlight how good the fans are. I will finish the wiring asap, as it's the best way to go. when i first bought my ea i was unlucky enough to spit a rock thru the clutch fan and into the radiator in reverse so i decided it had to go (also they sound like a ford9000)
replaced the whole assembly with a 5ltr taxi radiator, 16" davies craig thermo (setup to pull{engine side of radiator}) and thermatic swtich because of the 'problems' people have with these models. whilst not necessary i added another 12inch (setup to push {front of radiator}), removed the aircon condensor and trialed the manual switch and also running it off the thermatic switch (paralell with the 16") and found that running them both off the switch with the manual over-ride works best for crawlin thru traffic and on brake burnouts. i must also add removing the air con condensor added a markeble difference in cruising temps. one of the best conversions ever for these cars.

I have a 5L EB on LPG - not a taxi though - rust free even and has the 193kw EL v8 in it....
Id like a bit more radiator though. |

Hey,
I chose an aluminium cored radiator with plastic tanks, and it was the best thing i have bought, highway cruising temps are in the high 60deg region (allowing for gauge error) I have my fans connected through a voltage switch that gets it voltage signal from the temp sensor, works quite well, espescially with the couple hot days lately. Da22le : Which Voltage switch are you using? - one of the jaycar ones, or another one, and is it affected if the volts in the car drop? Cheers Nigel |

Dazzle,
I'd be interested in seeing your regulated speed fan and wiring setup, sounds a very efficient use of the fans. Why not post it here as we're always trying to improve our setups?

As an interesting note : The EB/D Fairmont Climate control Fan Speed Controler is a PWM Setup, and the Transistor is rated for > 20a. Might be something that could be adapted to the thermos, possibly with soft-start as well (wouldnt that be nice....)
