how would i go about beefing up my stereo in a BA XL ute, IM told there is an after market plug in set up that you can run an amp off and then subsequently more speakers and subs. Is this true
What are my options

i have an alpine head deck where the tissue holder is. Only problem is it needs to be a tilt face deck to see it properly (or angle to deck accordingly).

The 'power source' is moved to front passengers footwell as well. A extention plug though with three outlets solves that problem. I have placed it beside the passengers seat and attached it to the centre console.

Ive gone with the stock unit, then Amp under the passenger seat, 6x9's in the rear and 6" split in doors and behine the mirrors. I still wanted to use the steering wheel controls so putting in an addition head unit was pointless and with a manual was gonna be a pain in the a** changing cd's. plus I bought the Ipod Kit

There is always the expensive option, Go with ASL and get an Premo upgrade and then buy the alpine hub system which really lets you add heaps more into the system, then do a speaker and amp upgrade

but what do I need to do to the stock unit? is it as simple as just plugging something in

To be honest I had mine installed professionaly, but I never bought any special compnents to suit it or anything, just the amp, Spekers and Cables.

Think it may be pretty straight forward.

hey mate yeah you need a converter which converts your speaker wire into rca points you can pick them up from autobahn for about 10 buck it looks like a little black box. i would suggest you get them to put it in though just because its to much of a hasle if you install all other components the install will be quite cheap. thats what i did now im running splits amp and sub sounds unreal ps if you are going to install it yourself the wires are all located behind the left foot well scuff plate

What sdh89 suggested is prob the best option, but as you have the basic sound in the ute you wont get the best sound out of it. If you're just going to run a sub i would suggest just to use a line converter, if you want to run say splits and 6x9s and want good sound then i'd suggest putting a head unit in.

I first had the converter but the only adjustments you can make is Bass and Treble off the stock head unit and sound quality isn't the best. I now have a pioneer head unit and the sound is so much better. And just to clarify what some people have said, the head unit is fine to view from the tissue box holder so it doesnt have to be angled or anything like that, you can still change cds with ease in a manual car and you can still use the controls on the steering wheel but it comes at a cost of about $200-250

on angling the headunit only some have to be angled as i have mates who have kenwood and sony (god help him) in their and if its not angled you can't see the screen because its not clear enough

Sucks to be them haha. I haven't had any problems seeing mine and i honestly wouldn't have thought there would have been problems with other brands :?

it has to do with different sizes of displays, and also what colours the display is, some are so much easier to see than others

For instance my alpine if tilted so it looks like a normal head unit can't be read
