I have been lead to believe that the lengths are different.

Will get lengths for you in about half hour when I get up the shed.
Input shaft length is longer on V8, but internally they are very different, and much stronger than the I6 sibling, to the point that not any of the rotating mass from the I6 is interchangeable. V8 boxes have a different helix angle cut. From memory shifter position is different too. Call me in about half - 1 hours time, and I can run through it with you on the blower. Will have both boxes on the bench. Last edited by ELGT on Sun Feb 10, 2008 3:01 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

Input shaft length dIfference is about 30mm.
Helix angles vary between the I6 boxes as well, and some are the same as V8. No gears (apart from the EBGT Input shaft...) are interchangable between any I6 and V8, but all the other parts are (mainshaft, synchros, bearings etc). Strength of V8 box depends on when the parts in side were made. EG: A late AU cluster is dimensioally identical to that in the early E-series V8s and interchangable and a lot stronger. Shifter position is the same for E-series I6 and V8. AU extension housing is about 50mm longer than E-series, and again same for I6 and V8. Be careful when buying an Au V8 box as some dodgy operators have been extending AU I6 Input shafts (cutting and shutting two to make one longer one) and calling them V8 boxes. Easy way to tell is using 1st gear and rotating the input shaft and counting the complete revolutions to get one revolution from the output shaft. I6 is about 3.25:1, V8 is about 2.95:1. EBGT input shaft is a special to convert a late E-series I6 box to be used behind a v8 with a 3.25 1st gear. There's no input shaft to convert a V8 box to use it behind a six, although a good engineering shop should be able to shorten a V8 input shaft easily. |
