OK its time for a new car I'm looking for an EF or EL wagon. It’s going to be used as a tow car occasionally, so I'm after opinions as to which will make the better tow car XR6 or a V8?

The V8 is most certainly easier for towing, altho that is not to say the XR6 engine/package is not goint to impress for a 6cyl.
If your main use is to tow, then go the 8 IMHO, otherwise the 6 wouyld be a good normal family car that can tow when need be. If you were to start modifying this vehicle in any way, id go the 8 again, the sound is unbeatable.

Check out that... It's the Boosted Ford That Could on Autospeed. It's a 6 clinder Falcon setting the record for World's Fastest Carvan Tow back in 1991... |

if you are after a wagon, and an XR, you can only look for an EF XR6. there were no EL XR wagons made as far as i know, and the EF XR wagons are pretty hard to come by, as i would also imagine most v8 EF/EL wagons are.
therefore you may be struggling to find an 8. the 4lt 6 is still pretty good for towing, i use mine a bit, never had anything really big on there but for a trailer/small boat/gokart trailer ive never had a problem. if u are looking at heavy towing, there are other aspects you need to look at as well as the engine, ie transmission (should be serviced more regularly if towing regularly) perhaps look at a trans cooler. also depending on the trailer set up, the rear suspension may need looking at, although this is involving pretty heavy duty towing!!

We've hooked a modified car trailer loaded with 40-odd shopping trolleys to our almost 10 year old EF GLi with on a couple of occasions and it's handled it fine. It's not something we'd make a habit of though. If you're only towing occasionally then the stock I6 should be more than adequate. If you want serious towing power though then a Diesels what you want.

Surely you would be safer with the 8 as a tow car.

dont dismiss the I6 so quickly, ive fround its one of the best towing engines ive found, and the rear suspension is heavy enough to take any thing that you can carry or tow and theres alot of upgrades you can buy for it.

Thank you all. I think I look for a V8 wagon. I think they will be easier to find anyway.

I've seen a couple about the place. Rare as rocking horse manure though.
