I gather you have the standard factory setup for your exhaust. The first muffler from the exhaust manifold can be replaced with either a glass pack muffler or a straight piece of exhaust pipe. Most of the Fords I've seen usually retain the muffler at the back (as in the aftermarket sports exhausts). This should reduce the restriction in the exhaust.

$300 and u will get a 2.5 inch cat back system with one muffler,
its a bigger pipe with the rear muffler removed, will sound great.
im not sure how a standard exhaust with a muffler taken out would sound, im guessing pretty s**t. i wouldnt waste your time or money, get a new system mate

If youtr still running the factory exhaust system then I really wouldn't bother - unless you have a welder at home, the pipe already lying around and nothing better to do with your time.

The factory systems generally only have 1 proper muffler and 2 resinators (1 either side of the muffler). You could loose both resinators and that should make the exhaust system noisier - but it's unlikely to be a nice noise. You've still got the problem of the restrictive small diameter pipe, but more importantly the center muffler is your main restriction.

If you got an exhaust shop to do it, I'm guess it'd be close to $100.00ish. Which is $100.00 you'd be far better putting aside for an offshelf sports exhaust system - Lukey, Redback etc.

i cut the muffler out of my ef, and replaced it with a glass packed resonator from a bf. sounds ok i guess, but very different from the normal 4L 6. for the time and effort but i would just get a full system, only did mine that way coz i did it myself for free with bits lying around

daniel000,
Any exhaust shop can add the pipe, I got quoted $120 including bolt up flanges, cheaper if straight welded but a b**ch to remove for diff work etc.
Cheers,
Paul
